New super rice yield-boosting gene discovered by Chinese scientists
? On September 7, a reporter learned from the China National Rice Research Institute that the institute's super rice germplasm innovation team, in cooperation with the Institute of Genetics and Developmental Biology of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and other units, successfully isolated and cloned an important gene, GS2, from a local rice variety in Zhejiang that can significantly increase super rice yield.
It is understood that in the 1990s, the research team obtained a local large-grain variety from Zhejiang called "Baodali" from the National Rice Germplasm Resources Medium-Term Genebank. Its plants are tall and sturdy, with long panicles and large grains, and a 1000-grain weight of more than 48 grams. The researchers found that the dominant GS2 allele from "Baodali" can significantly increase rice panicle length and 1000-grain weight, but changes in plant height and tillering are not obvious, thereby increasing rice yield.
Experiments show that the dominant GS2 allele can increase the 1000-grain weight of 9311, the parent of "Liangyoupeijiu", China's first two-line hybrid rice super rice variety, by more than 40% and the plot yield by more than 14%. After combining it with the "Pei'ai 64S" variety to form hybrid rice, it can further increase yield by 9.5% compared with the "Liangyoupeijiu" variety.
