China's first finless porpoise calf successfully born in an enclosure

? On the morning of July 3, porpoise keeper Master Zhou was carrying "breakfast" in his hands as he went to feed the animals inside the enclosure at the Xijiang Finless Porpoise Rescue Center in Anqing City, Anhui Province. It is reported that in mid-April last year, the fisheries department of Anqing City, Anhui Province, successfully rescued 5 finless porpoises injured due to stranding in the Anqing section of the Yangtze River and transferred them to the Xijiang Finless Porpoise Rescue Center for rehabilitation treatment. One month later, on-site appraisal by experts confirmed that the rescue of the porpoises had been successful.

Not long ago, the Yangtze finless porpoise, listed as a nationally protected rare aquatic animal, was successfully bred under human care at the Xijiang Finless Porpoise Rescue Center in Anqing City. At around 11 p.m. on June 4 this year, the rescued porpoise successfully gave birth to a calf. At present, the calf is nursing normally and both mother and calf are safe. This is the first finless porpoise in China to be naturally born inside an enclosure, and it has received the endorsement of experts from the Chinese Academy of Sciences. This achievement is of great value and significance for the study and protection of this ancient species. Huang Youan
