Super hybrid rice in double-cropping system reaches early-season yield of up to 738.5 kg per mu

On the 18th, an expert panel invited by the Guangdong Provincial Department of Agriculture conducted an acceptance evaluation in Xingning City, Guangdong Province, for the research project "Annual Yield of 3,000 jin per mu with South China Double-Cropping Super Rice Technology," led by the team of Yuan Longping, the "father of hybrid rice." After on-site yield measurement, the expert panel announced that the project's early-season average yield was 703.9 kg per mu, with the highest yield reaching 738.5 kg.

At 10 a.m., Xinjin Village in Xinbei Town, Xingning City, where the experimental project is located, was already scorching under the blazing sun. The experimental fields stretched out in neat patches of pale yellow, and the fragrance of rice drifted through the fields with the wind. "This whole area is what I planted, and the growth is good. But continuous rain in May caused sheath blight, which affected grain filling," Li Zhixin, the grower of the experimental field, told Yuan Longping about the rice conditions.

Tang Xiangru, a professor at South China Agricultural University and one of the project's guiding experts, told reporters that the project covers an area of 110 mu and adopts the model of "'Chaoyou 1000' variety + double-cropping super rice strong-source active-sink high-quality rice (strong source refers to enhancing leaf photosynthesis, active sink refers to improving grain activity and increasing starch content, and high-quality rice refers to improving the taste and quality of rice) cultivation technology + pot-seedling mechanical transplanting."

The core of this technical model is: selecting "Chaoyou 1000," precision sowing on a seeding line, cultivating strong seedlings in pot trays in a greenhouse with "super rice seedling strengthening agent," transplanting with a pot-seedling transplanter, deep application of "super rice special fertilizer" at 70 kg per mu as base fertilizer, topdressing "super rice special fertilizer" at 30 kg per mu at the tillering stage after greening, spraying "super rice quality improver" at 200 grams per mu at the booting and heading stage, and unified irrigation and pest and disease control.

Yuan Longping said that 38 sites have been selected nationwide for the cultivation research of fifth-generation super hybrid rice. The "South China Double-Cropping Super Rice Annual Yield of 3,000 jin per mu Technology Research" project in Xingning City is one of the experimental sites for fifth-generation super hybrid rice.

"One characteristic of this variety is lodging resistance," Yuan Longping said.

The expert panel members at the on-site yield measurement and acceptance included Xie Hua'an, an academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences who bred the elite rice variety "Shanyou 63," and Luo Xiwen, an academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, among others. After on-site harvesting, weighing and calculation, the expert panel announced the acceptance results: the average yield was 703.9 kg per mu, and the highest yield reached 738.5 kg.

"Our country's rice technology is already at the international advanced level. If the double-cropping yield of 3,000 jin per mu can be achieved this time, it will be another new world record," Yuan Longping said.
