"Although we went through the '7-19' flood and a sudden drop in temperature not long ago, our apple output and quality were basically unaffected." On November 4, on Phoenix Mountain in Gangdi Village, Neiqiu County, the village committee director Yang Fengjun pointed to the bright red apples on the trees and told reporters that in half a year, Teacher Guo Suping had come to Gangdi Village more than a dozen times. "Every time there is an emergency, she rushes over immediately or calls to help us solve the problem."
Guo Suping, 58, is the wife of "Taihang's new Yugong" Li Baoguo and also the main force of Li Baoguo's research team. Since Li Baoguo's sudden death on April 10, she has spent less than 20 days at her home in Baoding. The rest of the time, she has been either in Gangdi or Qiannanyu, or in Luanping or Luanxian... From deep in the Taihang Mountains to the foot of the Yanshan Mountains, she always appears where the villagers need her.
Under Li Baoguo's guidance, the Fugang apple planting area in Gangdi Village has reached 3,500 mu. Counting it up, the first batch of apple trees planted in 1985 are now at a "venerable age" of 31 and face the problem of replacement. "Large saplings can produce a full harvest in three years, which is a relatively good choice for replacing old trees. At the same time, planting one mu of large saplings can also bring in more than 10,000 yuan in income." Guo Suping had long been mulling over the idea of cultivation trials for large saplings.
To better develop the forest and fruit industry, Li Baoguo had once planned an ecological grand garden project with Gangdi Village as its axis, 20 sq km as the core area, 30 sq km as the control area, and 50 sq km as the coverage area. Now, Guo Suping has organized fruit tree experts to discuss the project many times. In as little as two years, the relevant plans for the core area of the ecological grand garden project are expected to be implemented.
On November 5, Wu Tieyou, chairman of the Jiguanshan Ecological Agriculture Industrial Park in Luanxian, came to Gangdi Village with Guo Suping. "First, to visit and learn, and second, because I heard that the large apple saplings bred by Teacher Li before his death, which are planted in one year, bear fruit in two years, and produce a full harvest in three years, have been successfully trial-planted, I want to buy some and take them back to plant." Wu Tieyou said that his industrial park could get off the ground entirely thanks to Guo Suping. "Teacher Li left before the park planning was finished, and Teacher Guo took over all the remaining work. From planning to land preparation, from road building to water cellar building, from soil and fertilizer ratios to variety selection... she worried more than anyone." Wu Tieyou told reporters that after the nearly 10,000-mu industrial park is completed, it can help more than 2,000 surrounding farming households increase their per capita annual income by more than 2,000 yuan.
During his lifetime, Li Baoguo was committed to spreading some mature models of Taihang Mountain area development to more places. Now, the torch is passed on. With the guidance and help of Guo Suping and the research team, all 6 high-quality apple orchards in Luanping County, mainly based on "Xiaoguoguang", have completed sapling planting; the largest raspberry tissue culture room in China, in Nanhe County, is methodically carrying out red raspberry seedling cultivation; Weiji Town in Suining, Jiangsu, is promoting 2,000 mu of walnut planting across the town...
"Baoguo's unfinished work, we will carry on!" The tall and thin Guo Suping said with firm resolve. What reassures her is that Hebei Agricultural University became the first in the province to establish the Li Baoguo Poverty Alleviation Volunteer Service Team, forming 26 sub-teams, paired to assist 105 impoverished villages across the province, covering 88 assistance projects.
