The author learned from relevant sources that Zhang Guangxiu, hailed as the "most beautiful college student village official," died of infection on the afternoon of August 21 at Linyi People's Hospital in Shandong Province at the age of only 30.
Zhang Guangxiu, female, born in January 1986, from Qiaoxitou Village, Luozhuang Subdistrict, Luozhuang District, Linyi City, Shandong Province, was a National March 8th Red Banner Pacesetter, a Shandong Provincial March 8th Red Banner Pacesetter, and one of Shandong Province's Top Ten College Student Village Officials. She graduated from the School of Political Science and Law of Ludong University in July 2009, passed the exam to become a college student village official in August of that year, and went to Lushang Village, Fuxin Subdistrict, Fushan District, Yantai City, Shandong Province, to serve as assistant to the village committee director. While serving as assistant to the director and concurrently secretary of the Youth League branch of the Lushang residential area in Fuxin Subdistrict, Fushan District, Zhang Guangxiu served the people and won praise from Party members, officials and the people through her practical actions.
In September 2010, Zhang Guangxiu was diagnosed with acute leukemia and hospitalized for treatment. Even in the hospital, she still kept thinking about her work. After her deeds and illness were reported by the media, they aroused a strong response across the country and touched the hearts of central leading comrades. On February 14, 2011, Comrade Xi Jinping, then member of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee, Secretary of the Secretariat, and Vice President of the country, made an important instruction noting that the deeds of Comrade Zhang Guangxiu, a college student village official, were very plain and very moving. She served the villagers wholeheartedly, did not forget her duties despite serious illness, and won everyone's recognition with sincerity. Attention should be paid to summarizing and publicizing advanced models like Comrade Zhang Guangxiu, to further guide college student village officials to take root at the grassroots level, contribute their talents, and grow through training.
With the kind care of Xi Jinping and other central leading comrades and relevant parties, Zhang Guangxiu went to Beijing to receive surgical treatment. Through the careful medical treatment and nursing of experts, she recovered, and in June 2013 returned to her post as a village official, continuing to serve the villagers and fulfilling her promise that "once I recover, I will go back to being a village official." On January 15, 2014, Zhang Guangxiu wrote to General Secretary Xi Jinping, reporting in detail on her work and life, and expressing that she would certainly live up to General Secretary Xi's earnest expectations, work hard, serve the people, study diligently, keep improving, and make her own contribution to realizing the "Chinese Dream."
General Secretary Xi Jinping replied to Zhang Guangxiu, saying he felt gratified and happy that Zhang Guangxiu had recovered well and returned to work, and expressing the hope that college student village officials would love the grassroots level, take root there, broaden their knowledge, increase their abilities, promote rural development, benefit farmers, and leave their youth without regret.
