The guide on the road to goose farming: Jilin Agricultural University teacher Sun Yongfeng
"Three Regions" science and technology personnel poverty alleviation record

Going to townships, visiting villages, discussing problems, guiding on the front line... For three years, Sun Yongfeng, a teacher at the College of Animal Science and Technology of Jilin Agricultural University, has provided technical support to farmers in Longzhao Town, Da'an Citygoose farmingcooperatives, bringing their loosegoose farmingbusiness model onto a path of large-scale, standardized development after being regulated.
Even before Jilin Province's "Three Regions" talent support plan science and technology personnel special program, Sun Yongfeng wanted to develop the goose farming industry better from a professional perspective. After receiving support from the "Three Regions" project, Sun Yongfeng felt an even stronger sense of responsibility and greater significance, and was delighted that he could choose to serve agricultural production in this way.
Da'an City is a remote and impoverished area of Jilin Province. The region has vast grasslands, and developing the goose farming industry there enjoys uniquely favorable natural resource advantages.
"Through many years of frontline work and research, I found that Da'an farmers long for goose farming techniques. However, self-breeding and self-raising, and relying on nature to raise geese, remain the main forms of farming. The backward production methods and business models have severely restricted the rapid development of Da'an City's goose farming industry, and are extremely inconsistent with the pattern of modern agricultural development. How can the economic benefits of goose farming be improved?" Sun Yongfeng conducted an investigation.
Sun Yongfeng set his target on Longzhao Town, a major town for the goose farming industry in Da'an City and even in Jilin Province. Longzhao Town markets 400,000 commercial geese annually, but due to the small scale of goose industry development, its reserve of technical talent is even scarcer.
"Give a man a fish, and you feed him for a day; teach a man to fish, and you feed him for a lifetime." "The most important thing is to cultivate local talent for the area who understands goose farming techniques, and enhance the region's own capacity for self-development," Sun Yongfeng said. With the principle of "to raise geese well, first cultivate people," he began the first step of "focusing on typical examples and setting up models" to cultivate "self-development" capacity.
Gao Yuqin is a capable local woman who understands goose breeding egg incubation techniques. She has 30 years of goose farming experience and has a certain influence in the local goose farming community, but for many years her production scale and management level showed no improvement.
"Teacher Sun suggested that we organize and plan to establish a professional goose farming cooperative, adopting the promotion and demonstration concept of 'good breeds + good methods,' starting from the key points of breeding technology - 'breeds, feed, disease, management, housing' - to the entire industry chain's 'production, processing, sales,' with key technical support for goose industry cooperatives and large goose farming households," Gao Yuqin said.
Today, these cooperatives and large goose farming households, through "on-site guidance + technical training + telephone consultation + QQ groups + WeChat groups," have established a spatial three-dimensional technical demonstration system with "materials, videos, and audio."
After 10 years of technical support, Gao Yuqin has developed from a small-scale goose breeding egg incubator operator into the leader of a professional goose farming cooperative integrating "breeding goose farming + breeding egg incubation + commercial goose farming + commercial goose buyback." She has 30,000 breeding geese in stock, her goose houses have been built to a standardized level, her incubation capacity reaches 300,000 breeding eggs per year, and she has driven 62 large households in the area to carry out large-scale commercial goose farming.
Sun Yongfeng always visits goose farming households around Longzhao Town, carrying out a large amount of work such as goose farming technical guidance and epidemic prevention and disease control techniques. Through technology dissemination, visits and research, and solving difficulties, he stays grounded, entering villages and houses for face-to-face interviews and heart-to-heart problem solving. He deeply connects with goose farming households, and through introducing technology, technical training, telephone consultation and distributing scientific materials, he solves people's difficulties on the front line.
At present, Sun Yongfeng has brought farmers more than 10 scientific and technological achievements, held 12 large-scale training sessions, trained more than 500 person-times, cultivated 50 local goose farming talents, and distributed more than 5,000 copies of science and technology books and goose farming materials. "He has become the 'guide' for farmers in goose farming, a 'practical person' serving goose farming households, a down-to-earth 'doer,' a 'close friend' helping people overcome difficulties, and a 'leader' in scientific development," farmers said.
Sun Yongfeng has twice received support from the "Three Regions" talent support plan. "This will enable me to serve the people better and more systematically," Sun Yongfeng said. This is both an honor and a motivation. (Science and Technology Daily
