Aid-Tibet official Wang Yuejian builds the Party's good image in people's hearts
Xinhua News Agency, Lhasa, July 12 (Reporters Luobu Ciren, Zhang Jingpin) During his 3 years as an aid-Tibet official in Nagqu County, Hangzhou aid-Tibet official Wang Yuejian took the most urgent needs of the masses as the direction of his work, focusing on implementing livelihood aid-Tibet projects that directly benefit the people, and was affectionately called by local officials and masses the "Pujiu Secretary" (aid-Tibet secretary) who brings good fortune to the northern Tibetan plateau.
Not long after entering Tibet in 2013, Wang Yuejian visited Tashi Tsering's home in Huoren Village, Nagqu Town, and found that 3-year-old Zelang Tsering had a severe cleft lip and palate, and the whole family looked dejected. It turned out that cleft lip and palate surgery required more than 20,000 yuan in surgical fees, which was no small sum for an ordinary herder family.
"Aid to Tibet is a national project, and the masses must feel the tangible benefits of aid to Tibet." In Wang Yuejian's view, the child's illness was the heartache of the whole family. To this end, he contacted through various channels the charity organization "Operation Smile China," which specializes in providing free surgical treatment for children with cleft lip and palate from poor families, so that Zelang Tsering successfully underwent surgery.
Over the course of 3 years, 55 children with cleft lip and palate in Nagqu County received free treatment. This not only let the children smile again, but even changed the fate of many families.
"In the past, whenever my son looked in the mirror he would cry and make a scene, and the whole family was sad together. Now, my son shouts that he wants to look in the mirror and take photos, which has made our whole family regain confidence in a happy life. This is all thanks to Secretary Wang," said Tashi Tsering.
Han Kai, founder of "Operation Smile China," said: "We had once thought of carrying out treatment for children with cleft lip and palate in Tibet, but had never been able to make the trip. Only after Secretary Wang Yuejian did a great deal of preliminary work were we able to carry out this kind of surgery in Tibet for the first time."
"The strength of aid-Tibet officials is limited; we must link the recipient place and the assisting place together." After visiting all 19 schools in the county, Wang Yuejian launched the "Love in Nagqu" public welfare activity, connecting Nagqu County with Hangzhou, and through a WeChat public account implemented public welfare activities in Nagqu County such as "Let Every Classroom Have a Reading Corner" and "Support the Nagqu Teaching System," promoting positive interaction between the "aid-Tibet front line" and the "aid-Tibet rear," and resolving the urgent needs of educational institutions in Nagqu County.
Kongma Township Central Primary School had long lacked televisions and urgently needed printers and duplicating machines for printing exam papers. Wang Yuejian contacted entrepreneurs in Hangzhou to donate 10 television sets and also sent printers and duplicating machines. Qimei Sita, vice principal of Kongma Township Central Primary School, said: "In the past, it was hard for the children to intuitively understand the country's development achievements. With televisions, the children can learn about the changes in the interior of the motherland and increase their identification with the motherland."
Wang Yuejian kept firmly in mind the duty of Party members to maintain close ties with the masses, and made many "Tibetan relatives" in Nagqu County. During festivals and holidays, he would visit these relatives, send condolence goods, and pay tuition when a child advanced in school or medical expenses when someone fell ill.
Cizong, a 73-year-old man in the Nagqu County nursing home, was paralyzed in the lower body, had no children, and sometimes could only crawl with his hands. Wang Yuejian paid out of his own pocket for an automated wheelchair and taught the elderly man to use it hand by hand. Cizong said: "Now all the elderly in the nursing home know Secretary Wang. Although they cannot call his full name, as soon as they hear that Secretary Pujiu has come, everyone feels as if their own son has arrived."
"Four must-go, four must-understand; visit the people's conditions, stay grounded." In the studies and education of "Three Stricts and Three Honests" and "Two Studies and One Action," Wang Yuejian set such rules for himself. He insisted on going to the countryside for research and visiting villages and households at least two days every week. Every time he reached a township, he had to enter hospitals and schools, and had to enter village committees and herders' homes to visit and comfort poor households.
In order to understand conditions at the grassroots level, within two months after entering Tibet, Wang Yuejian traveled to all 12 townships in the county and visited more than 70 of the county's 137 villages. In the eyes of colleagues, Wang Yuejian "takes on difficulties himself and goes to distant places himself." In October 2013, Wang Yuejian and colleagues went to Nima Township, the most remote township in Nagqu County, for research. On Qingla Mountain at an altitude of more than 5,300 m, the vehicle broke down, with a bottomless abyss on one side and cliffs on the other, extremely dangerous. Together with local villagers, they lifted the vehicle over the mountain road. By the time they returned to the county, it was already 5 o'clock in the morning.
Dongrelong Village in Youqia Township is one of the most remote villages in Nagqu County. Villager Luosang rented someone else's house to live in, his wife had mental problems and was bedridden from illness, and the home was dirty and smelly, so few people usually stepped through his door. Wang Yuejian voluntarily took Luosang as a paired assistance household, visited and comforted him every month, and sent rice, flour and oil.
Luosang said: "I never expected that I, a person looked down upon by others, would become related to such a good relative. Every time I say words of thanks, Secretary Wang says he was sent by the Communist Party." (End)
