Bama Fragrant Pigs Farmed in Rudong, Jiangsu, Their Fragrance Spreads Far and Wide
In the eyes of traditional pig farmers, pigs should be as big as possible, but Gao Jun of Jiangzhuang Village, Rudong Economic Development Zone, introduced Bama fragrant pigs from Fujian at the end of 2015, overturning people's views on pig farming.
Gao Jun had always been in the farming industry and had been looking for high-quality pig breeds. One day, he saw information about Bama fragrant pigs online. Bama fragrant pigs are raised mainly on grass and forage, supplemented by cereal grains. Because they are not fed hormone-containing feed, the fragrant pigs have a long growth cycle of about one year, and adult fragrant pigs weigh at most only 90 jin. However, their meat quality is good, and after cooking the meat is fragrant and sweet; even without adding any seasoning it has a rich aroma, and it has long enjoyed the reputation of "one family cooks meat, four neighbors smell the fragrance; from seven li away its scent can be detected."
After looking up information online, Gao Jun quickly contacted farmers in Fujian and traveled to Fujian to inspect Bama fragrant pigs on site. As soon as he returned to Rudong, Gao Jun discussed with his family the idea of farming Bama fragrant pigs. On his second trip to Fujian, Gao Jun personally drove 30 sows and 2 boars back to Rudong. However, due to lack of experience in raising fragrant pigs, epidemic prevention work was not done well during the first breeding, and the piglet survival rate was only 70%.
A fall into a pit, a gain in your wit. To this end, Gao Jun worked hard to study Bama fragrant pig breeding technology. He also cooperated with the Jiangsu Academy of Agricultural Sciences, transferred 8 mu of land, planted ryegrass and other crops, and built an imitation-ecological greenhouse to raise Bama fragrant pigs in a free-range manner in the future. Now, his family's Bama fragrant pigs are bred and reproduced on their own, and there are currently more than 100 piglets.
