During the New Year and festivals, farmhouse restaurants welcome plenty of guests! Or people go out to visit relatives and see the wider world! And it was just during a relative visit that Zheng Xiaoxue from Tangshan, Hebei, spotted a pretty good project!

Zheng Xiaoxue: I'm from Tangshan, Hebei, and I run a farmhouse restaurant. This winter I went to Guangdong to visit relatives and found that roast goose is great. I thought, could I also raise geese, make iron-pot stewed goose, and even hold goose races? Could the expert give some advice?

Raising geese is actually quite a good project, and we've recommended it to everyone before. Next, let's connect with Professor Diao Youxiang from Shandong Agricultural University to talk about the prospects for goose farming.

Good for health, relatively good returns

Now, as the living standards of our country's people keep rising, goose consumption is also constantly increasing. Goose meat is rich in various amino acids, protein, vitamins and trace elements essential to the human body, and it has a relatively low fat content and a high content of unsaturated fatty acids. It is very good for human health, and the economic returns are relatively good.

Now generally, a meat goose raised to about 70 days brings a net profit of10 yuanor so. A whole goose brings a profit of100 yuanto150 yuanor so. So now the number of geese raised is gradually increasing. In our country now, the annual output of commercial meat geese is about 200 million, and the number is still rising.

Goose breeds

Our country now has27breeds of geese; it's fair to say goose resources are very abundant. Currently, the more commonly raised ones include Yangzhou White Goose, Tianpu Meat Goose, Taihu Goose, Wanxi White Goose and so on. These breeds should be raised according to local conditions.

Guangdong raises mostly Lion Head Goose, Anhui raises mostly Wanxi White Goose, Jiangxi raises mostly Taihu Goose, the Northeast region raises mostly Purple Goose, Shandong region raises mostly Taizhou Goose, Zhejiang raises mostly Zhedong White Goose, and Sichuan raises mostly Tianpu Meat Goose

Breed selection

Breeds should be selected according to purpose. By purpose, geese can be divided into meat geese, egg-laying geese, down geese and fatty liver geese.

Meat geese

China's medium and large breeds come to market relatively quickly and have relatively good meat quality, so they can all be used as meat geese, such as Lion Head Goose, Magang Goose, Xupu White Goose, Zhedong White Goose, Sichuan White Goose, Wanxi White Goose, etc.

Egg-laying geese

The goose with the highest egg production in China is represented by Wulong Goose, along with Purple Goose, Taihu Goose, Yangzhou Goose and Sichuan White Goose.

Down geese

For down production, white geese are the best; the top choices are Wanxi White Goose, Zhedong White Goose and Sichuan White Goose.

Fatty liver geese

For fatty liver production, the main breed is Landes Goose, an imported breed from France; domestically, Lion Head Goose, Xupu White Goose, Taihu Goose and Zhedong White Goose are also relatively outstanding
