Bama fragrant pig farming helps farmers onto the road to prosperity
A few days ago, the "Bama fragrant pigs" raised by Yang Wencai of Group 3, Pingxi Village, Liuduzhai Town, Longhui County, Hunan Province, were taken away in one go by Boss Liao from a Shenzhen hotel - 60 piglets, bringing in more than 60,000 yuan. "My fragrant pigs never need any sales pitch - customers all come to my door to pick them up themselves, and sometimes demand even exceeds supply..." Yang Wencai said proudly. Approaching his farm, one sees dozens of sows, each with a group of lively piglets, frolicking on the hillside and munching on the various plants growing there...
Yang Wencai once worked as a migrant worker in Guangzhou, Shenzhen, Jinhua in Zhejiang and other places. In 2013, he returned to his hometown because his mother was ill. He happened to learn about Bama fragrant pigs on the internet. Thinking of how some farmers use clenbuterol to make more profit, Yang Wencai believed that high-quality Bama fragrant pigs could better win consumers' hearts. He made three trips to pig farms in Bama County, Guangxi, to inspect and learn on site, learning techniques from the masters, carefully observing as he worked, and asking questions whenever problems arose, until he had finally mastered a solid set of pig-raising skills.
In August 2014, Yang Wencai used his savings from many years of migrant work as start-up capital and built a pig farm covering 800 sq m, buying back 15 sows and one boar at 2,300 yuan each. Fragrant pigs are hardy and breed quickly. From the second litter on, each litter averaged more than 10 piglets, with a survival rate of over 95 percent. After two years, the number of breeding sows he raised had reached more than 50. A sow can produce 5 litters in two years, basically 7-12 piglets per litter, and more than 600 piglets can be bred in a year. As soon as the fragrant pork hit the market, it was welcomed by consumers.
At present, Yang Wencai has 56 sows on hand, more than 400 piglets, markets more than 1,000 pigs a year, and earns a net income of 200,000 yuan a year. Now he is expanding with another 200 sq m of pig pens, and has also bought back 16 Jiangxi Taihu breeding pigs and Tibet Nyingchi Tibetan township breeding pigs, crossbreeding the three breeds, striving to reach 600 pigs on hand.
