Wang Haiping: Growing Organic Vegetables on "Trees"

Wang Haiping, a farmer from Shicheng Neighborhood Committee, Sushan Township, Duchang County, has been pursuing innovation in farming and breeding for more than 20 years. He has obtained 1 invention patent and 4 utility model patents, and has used his own inventions to explore a new model integrating farming and breeding - growing organic vegetables on "trees" - which not only reduces farming and breeding costs and improves economic benefits, but also greatly reduces environmental pollution.

Recently, the reporter came to Wang Haiping's pig farm and saw a greenhouse on the roof of a 3-story pig house, with an area of about 2 mu. Pak choi is grown on the "trees" inside the greenhouse, with rows of "vegetable trees" neatly arranged, like a "forest." The greenhouse is very clean, without a speck of mud, and pleasing to the eye. "This is my invention, a standardized three-dimensional pipeline micro-irrigation vegetable cultivation device, 1.2 m tall. It obtained a utility model patent at the end of 2015 and has already been submitted for an invention patent," Wang Haiping said. "By deeply fermenting pig manure and pairing it with uncontaminated soil, then putting it into the cultivation device to grow pak choi, and through precise fertilization and water supply, the growth of the pak choi is controlled. Pak choi grown this way is organic vegetable, priced at more than 20 yuan per kg, and still in short supply."

Wang Haiping, 49 this year, returned home to farm after graduating from junior high school and learned solid farming and breeding skills through China Agricultural Correspondence University. In 1995, he began raising pigs at scale, and in 2004 he established Duchang County Chuangyi Industrial Co., Ltd. In the process of raising pigs, he actively explored new methods and established the 666-108 pig-raising system innovation project (6 controls, 6 separations, 6 combinations, 108 items in total), which not only helps prevent and control pig diseases, but also saves costs and improves economic benefits. At its peak, his pig farm marketed 15,000 pigs annually.

To explore a new model integrating farming and breeding, he boldly innovated and successively invented "a multi-stage dry-wet separation device for pig house waste," "an automatic timed and quantitative feeding device for fattening pigs," "a mixed planting and breeding energy-saving and environmentally friendly ecological pig house," and others, and obtained 4 utility model patents. Among them, the "mixed planting and breeding energy-saving and environmentally friendly ecological pig house" also obtained an invention patent.

The standardized three-dimensional pipeline micro-irrigation vegetable cultivation device he invented has been successfully tested over 2 years with pak choi, chili peppers and other crops. Using this device to grow vegetables in a greenhouse, the unit area yield is 4 to 6 times that of ordinary greenhouse vegetables, and the benefits are even higher. "Different soil compositions are configured according to different crops. Through this device, precise fertilization and water supply control the entire growth process of the crops. It not only has no pollution at all, but also saves land, fertilizer and water, and is highly efficient." Wang Haiping is very satisfied with his invention.
