The quality rice industry requires rational planning and layout

China's high-yield rice breeding, from the Green Revolution to the utilization of hybrid vigor and the development of super rice, has consistently been internationally leading, which is a very glorious achievement. The current situation facing China's rice industry is mainly reflected in three aspects: First, current stable production development has contributed greatly to food ration security. In 1997, China's total rice output exceeded 207 million tons for the first time. From 1997 to 2003, structural adjustment led to a decline. However, since 2004, rice has maintained stable development, achieving 12 consecutive increases. In 2015, China's rice output reached a historic high, and the national per capita availability has already exceeded per capita consumption. Second, resource misallocation and large inventory. We feed 22% of the population with 7% of the cultivated land, but we consume a relatively large amount of chemical fertilizers and pesticides. In addition, China's rice industry faces problems such as a low-level industrial chain, high costs, low efficiency, and lack of brands.

Currently there are several main problems: First, the processing industry. Why is it so difficult to build rice brands in China? An important reason is that the technical content of rice processing is relatively low. A single household can buy a machine and create a small brand. Why has this situation formed? Because processing capacity is severely excessive. Our country's rice industry research strength is very strong, but the rice industry strength is very weak. In the industry we call it "strong rice cultivation, weak rice industry," and the development of the rice industry is relatively difficult. Second, the public influence of China's rice brands is not strong. Although there are some regional brands, there are also many problems, especially in some major production provinces where it is impossible to promote a true brand with a geographical indication. It should be said that regional brands are not strong, and the market share of large enterprise brands is not very high. There are many specialty rice resources, including selenium-enriched rice, ratoon rice, etc., but there are no particularly well-known brands, and rice brand building efforts are insufficient. By comparison, Thai jasmine rice and Japanese Koshihikari rice have very great international influence.

The development trend of China's quality rice: First, overall advancement to achieve three transformations: standardization, scaling up, and branding. Second, seek market benefits through use segmentation. 82% of China's rice is used as food rations, and in addition there are many specialty varieties used for other purposes. For example, the variety "Zhongjiazao 17" has been promoted very quickly in area over the past two years. Why? Because it is particularly suitable for making rice noodles and rice vermicelli that southerners love to eat, and it is very popular in Hunan, Guangxi, Yunnan, Guizhou and other places, so the variety has been promoted especially quickly. Quality rice should be planned and rationally laid out at the national level on the basis of use segmentation, distinguishing uses and planting regions.
