Peacock farming helps Lu Guangxian open the door to escaping poverty and becoming prosperous
The peacock is a very beautiful bird. Not only can it be enjoyed for viewing, it can also help poor households escape poverty and become prosperous. Last year, Lu Guangxian, a poor household in Yousheng Village, Zaimiao Town, Shangsi County, opened the door to escaping poverty and becoming prosperous by raising peacocks.
In June 2016, Lu Guangxian, a poor household, went elsewhere to learn from a master and study peacock breeding and management techniques. After completing his training, with financial support from relatives and friends, he bought more than 30 peacock chicks and some adult peacocks and returned to his hometown, Yousheng Village, to start a breeding business.
A few days ago, the author conducted an exclusive interview at Lu Guangxian's home.
"How many peacocks have you raised at most? How many do you still have now?" Lu Guangxian, a villager of Yousheng Village, Zaimiao Town, Shangsi County: "At most more than 100. Now there are more than 30 on hand."
Lu Guangxian told the author that peacocks can fly, so raising them is relatively difficult. It requires skill, patience, and careful tending. Moreover, peacock breeding stock is relatively expensive. Generally, one peacock chick costs 6 or 7 hundred yuan, and a slightly larger breeding stock costs nearly 1,000 yuan. One careless moment can mean losing everything. Lu Guangxian also told the author that once he forgot to close the door when entering the breeding area, and 2 peacocks took the opportunity to fly away and never returned. Because of one oversight during breeding, Lu Guangxian lost more than 2,000 yuan in one go.
"Usually, where do you sell your peacocks?" "To Vietnam." Lu Guangxian said.
Lu Guangxian explained that the biggest risk in raising peacocks is sales. If sales are poor, there will be a loss. The longer peacocks are raised, the more valuable they become. One of his peacocks can sell for 3,000 to 4,000 yuan. Due to scientific management, as of now, Lu Guangxian has sold more than 100 peacocks in total.
Villager Lu Guangxian told the author: "I started raising peacocks in June last year. By the end of the year, I had not only earned back the costs, but also made a profit of more than 10,000 yuan."
Lu Guangxian succeeded in raising peacocks. He revealed to the author that after making money from raising peacocks, he increased his breeding efforts. The more than 30 peacocks currently on hand were all bred using the money he earned.
"How much money have you made from raising peacocks so far?" Villager Lu Guangxian said: "After deducting costs, I have still made more than 30,000 yuan."
"You escaped poverty in 2016, mainly by raising peacocks?" Villager Lu Guangxian said: "Yes, last year I escaped poverty by raising peacocks!"
Last year, Lu Guangxian escaped poverty by raising peacocks. At present, one poor household in the village is learning peacock breeding from him and has also raised more than 10. Lu Guangxian said he wants to encourage more poor households to take up specialty breeding together and embark on the path of escaping poverty and becoming prosperous.
