When it comes to donkeys, it is easy to think of the clever and gentle little donkey in the movie "Avanti"; the donkey in it has bright eyes and a white muzzle. Now there is another kind of donkey called the "Wutou donkey," which is black all over. In Luotai Village, Huaqi Town, Qinzhou District, someone is raising this kind of donkey.

It is understood that there are currently fewer than 5,000 Wutou donkeys of this breed in China, and the Wutou donkey breeding base in Huaqi Town, Qinzhou District, alone raises nearly 700. It is said that in the past, the ejiao made from this kind of donkey hide was exclusively for the emperor's use, which shows how precious the Wutou donkey is; in today's terms, it has very high economic value. Its price is also considerable now. This batch of Wutou donkeys comes from Shandong, and the price of each breeding jack is around 20,000. Not only that, when you approach a Wutou donkey, it will take the initiative to stretch its long muzzle toward you and charmingly make friendly overtures. With such a precious Wutou donkey, some people in the market even pull a bait-and-switch, passing off fake "Li Gui" as the real "Li Kui." According to Luo Zisheng, the person in charge of the base, when they first purchased donkeys in rural Shandong, a few villagers even dyed ordinary, common donkeys with bright eyes and white muzzles black. After buying them back, as the donkeys grew, the white hair on their muzzles appeared, and only then did they realize they had been cheated.

In conversation with Luo Zisheng, it was learned that he is an entrepreneur with high aspirations. As a locally born farmer, he had previously worked in construction in Shanxi for more than ten years. When he returned to his hometown in 2013, he saw that most of the land in his hometown was idle, and he came up with the idea of returning home to develop ecological agriculture. During his investigations, Luo Zisheng found that Wutou donkeys had great market potential and that there was a gap in breeding them in Gansu, so he went to the Shandong Dong'e Group to study Wutou donkey breeding techniques for 3 years. Luo Zisheng said that he has now transferred more than 7,000 mu of land and established a female donkey breeding area, a Wutou donkey breeding area, a Wutou jack breeding area, and a donkey foal fattening area, with more than 700 donkeys on hand. In February this year, under the careful care of Luo Zisheng and others, the base's first little donkey was successfully born. Amid the joy, Luo Zisheng is also planning to expand the breeding scale. "My goal is to have 15,000-20,000 donkeys slaughtered annually by 2020, while carrying out deep processing of donkey meat, researching and developing donkey milk products, and building the base into a Wutou donkey improved-breed breeding center with a certain influence and a leading industrial technology research and development cluster." Luo Zisheng told reporters that after the base is completed and put into operation, it will provide breeding female donkeys for farmers to raise themselves, with ownership belonging to the company; the ownership and proceeds of the donkey foals born will belong to the farmers; and the base will provide "one-on-one" support and guidance to farmers in feed, breeding, raising, and technology, driving nearby villagers to carry out moderate-scale breeding, and absorbing women and middle-aged and elderly villagers around the base for nearby work, helping villagers increase income and get rich.

Having said so much, where exactly can the meat and milk of this Wutou donkey be bought? Don't be in a hurry to think about eating it yet; Luo Zisheng is more anxious about these things than you are. In 2016, 3 double-row donkey barns totaling 7,240 sq m and 3 forage sheds totaling 1,500 sq m were completed, 700 breeding donkeys were introduced, and an investment of 46.1 million yuan was completed. The 3 donkey barns and supporting facilities being continued in 2017 are under construction and are expected to be completed before October. After all 6 donkey barns are put into use, the Wutou donkey breeding scale will reach more than 1,200 head. At the same time, 4,500 mu of alfalfa was interplanted within the base area, and 3,000 mu of land was newly transferred in 2017 and included in the Qinzhou District farmland fallow pilot, planting 3,000 mu of arrow pea. At present, the base has provided more than 100 fixed jobs to farmers in nearby poor villages such as Luotai and Caotan, allowing each household to increase income by 40,000 yuan per year, with more than 400 seasonal workers throughout the year, and a total of 5.8 million yuan in wages paid.
