High-mountain cattle farming opened the door to prosperity for Liu Yujun
Liu Yujun is a villager of Group 9, Sanjiao Village, Banxi Town, Youyang Autonomous County. A few days ago, this reporter came here and saw him and his wife Zhang Xiaohong leading a herd of cattle out of the cattle shed to the water pool in the courtyard to drink.
Took out a loan to buy 12 cattle
"I have no craft, so I can only go out to work." Liu Yujun said that a few years ago, for the sake of his children's school fees, he looked for work everywhere, which was very hard but the income was not encouraging. In 2015, the cadres of the village Party branch and village committee urged Liu Yujun to take up livestock breeding.
"Few people live here, and there are many barren hills and grassy slopes, which are quite suitable for breeding." said Ran Donggui, secretary of the Party branch of Sanjiao Village. Relying solely on Liu Yujun doing odd jobs to send two children to school was very difficult, so a long-term poverty-alleviation industry had to be found.
Liu Yujun wanted to raise cattle, but where the start-up capital would come from was what worried him most.
"You don't need to worry about that; poor households can get loans." Ran Donggui helped Liu Yujun complete the loan paperwork. Very soon, Liu Yujun obtained a loan of 30,000 yuan and bought 12 calves. At the end of 2015, Liu Yujun's cattle-raising plan was carried out smoothly.
A technician came to the home
Breeding did not go smoothly all the way. Not long after the cattle were bought, 2 died of illness.
Just when Liu Yujun was at his wit's end, Tang Jian'an, a senior veterinarian of the Chongqing Academy of Animal Sciences and the science and technology commissioner for Sanjiao Village, came to his home and gave him technical guidance.
"Professor Tang is a very good person, and my cattle-raising skills all depend on him." Speaking of Tang Jian'an, Liu Yujun was full of gratitude. He said that Professor Tang came to the village once every quarter, and each time he came to his home to give guidance. He also left his phone number and told him to call in time whenever he ran into problems.
After that, in the breeding process, no matter what problems Liu Yujun encountered, he would call Tang Jian'an at the first opportunity, and Tang Jian'an would also solve them promptly.
According to Liu Yujun, on the evening of April 11 this year, a cow was giving birth, and his wife directly ground soy milk to feed the cow. Unexpectedly, after eating the soy milk, the cow's belly began to swell and it gasped for breath. Seeing the problem getting more and more serious, he thought of calling Tang Jian'an.
"It was already past 12 o'clock then, and Professor Tang had long been resting. I hesitated for a moment but still made the call. Unexpectedly, he answered very quickly." Liu Yujun said that on the phone he explained the situation to Professor Tang, and Professor Tang told him to feed the cow tobacco leaves plus sour water plus dust from the kang, and one feeding was enough.
"Most of his methods are simple folk methods that cost no money and work well." Liu Yujun said that with Professor Tang as technical support, breeding went more smoothly. At present, it has grown to 19 cattle, and there have been no more losses.
Shaking off poverty and becoming rich, with no worries about food and clothing
As the science and technology commissioner for Sanjiao Village, Tang Jian'an not only provided technical training for the village's breeding households, but last year also brought 8 Rongchang breeding pigs to the village's poor households. Liu Yujun got two, and now they have grown to 5 fattened pigs.
"These sows can be mated and give birth in August or September." Liu Yujun said this would also bring his family a considerable income. "In the second half of the year, I plan to sell 4 more cattle, with an expected income of 40,000 yuan, and pay off all the loans by the end of the year." Liu Yujun said that through breeding, his family's situation had gradually improved. Not only had he successfully shaken off poverty, but life was getting more and more prosperous.
