What tree species is the Chinese arborvitae? The Chinese arborvitae is a shrub or tree of the Cupressaceae family, genus Thuja; it generally grows in the crevices of cliffs at an altitude of 700-2100 m, in areas with shallow soil and rock; but now this tree has become an endangered species. It is mainly produced in the Daba Mountains of Sichuan, China, the Taihang Mountains of North China, and other areas.
The Chinese arborvitae has grayish-brown or brown bark that cracks into long, thin strips. Apart from the needle-shaped and awl-shaped leaves in the seedling stage, all the leaves are scale-like and decussate. It is a monoecious plant with unisexual flowers. The cones are elliptical to ovate, and the seeds are flat with thin wings on both sides. This species differs from Thuja koraiensis in that the underside of the scale-leaf branchlets has no white powder, and the central scale leaves have no glandular dots. It is suitable for solitary or grouped planting, or for use as a hedge.
What is usually available on the market is mainly the low-end slope arborvitae and ground arborvitae, up to ordinary Chinese arborvitae pieces costing a few hundred yuan to one or two thousand. If it is high-end quality Chinese arborvitae, the price is generally in the tens of thousands of yuan.
