Dong Hwa Green Experimental Restaurant sources local produce and also runs a farmers' direct sales shop
Last year, National Dong Hwa University opened Taiwan, China's first green experimental restaurant run by teachers and students themselves, with all ingredients sourced from organic smallholder farmers in Hualien. Teachers and students have adopted 120 pear trees and more than 7 fen of rice paddies, and students even go into the fields with farmers to pull weeds and catch insects. Yesterday the restaurant launched five green products: organic Asian pears, organic rice gift boxes, Dahe roasted brown sugar, green kitchen rice pizza, and low-carbon healthy bento boxes, hoping consumers will eat rice to protect frogs and buy sugar to help communities, and listen together to the moving stories behind the food.
The school contracts rice paddies, using eating to protect the environment
