On 520 in 2014, this year's red-flesh plum pole-picking began on this day. The work started with great momentum, because although this year's plums had a bumper harvest, they were refused by the farmers' association and vendors. How many tribal members were hoping that the plums on their other plot of land could pick out a bit of hope for this year's living expenses, which still had no source. But after only half a day of picking, heavy rain poured down, and the riverbed access road of the South Link Highway was cut off. Hundreds of bags of plums at six-tenths ripe were thus destined to rot by the roadside.
The turn of spring and summer is originally a season of nonstop busyness: in April you look at the plums, in May you harvest the plums, in June you pick the peaches; especially in early May, the yellow-flesh plums that ripen first always drop fruit quickly, making shipment difficult, and then right after come the Taitung plums and white water plums, whose season is very fast, ripening yellow and dropping within 10 days; only after that comes the red-flesh plum, arriving in full force.
The wholesaler had originally agreed on an on-mountain pole-picking price, and it was only a sweat-and-blood price of 6 yuan per kg; with the road cut off and the rain falling nonstop so it could not be repaired, this sweat-and-blood price probably also faced the danger of vanishing entirely.
