In the past year or two, with the efforts of the Forestry Bureau, scholars from the Taiwan Forestry Research Institute, and civil society groups, "satoyama" has gradually become a well-known term. However, it is not only paddy terrace environments that can be called "satoyama"! In fact, according to the three-fold approach and five key points proposed by the "Satoyama Initiative," there is no clear determination that only terrace environments can conform to the spirit of the "Satoyama Initiative," because the "Satoyama Initiative" emphasizes locally adapted methods, seeking ways to implement the Satoyama Initiative within each respective environment. So, is it possible to implement satoyama environmental management wisdom in a vegetable garden?

For a hundred years, the life experience of the ancestors in the low hills of Yuanli Township, Miaoli County, has shaped Taiwan's local satoyama management wisdom. Cobblestone field ridges made from local materials enriched biodiversity and also created field aesthetics; the unique pond and irrigation channel system retained rainwater for irrigation, solving the local problem of distinct dry and wet seasons and also creating a comfortable microclimate; through composting, natural resources were recycled and used, enriching the soil of the satoyama; widely used bamboo, taken from local materials and returned to the earth! These are all sustainable practices that conform to the spirit of the "Satoyama Initiative."

This year, in the "Meeting Satoyama Management Wisdom in the Vegetable Garden" working holiday, let us, through the processes of stacking stones, building field ridges, composting, and putting up trellises, come to understand the "Satoyama Initiative" together, as well as the various local environmental management wisdom that conforms to the "Satoyama Initiative." Let us try, through hands-on work in the "Satoyama School" vegetable garden, to learn, preserve, and pass on this satoyama environmental management wisdom that conforms to the spirit of sustainability and puts into practice harmonious coexistence between people and the environment!
