Rabies animal experiments: animal rights groups say they are scientifically unnecessary

The Council of Agriculture planned to conduct rabies virus animal experiments this year. The Taiwan Animal Society Research Association, together with the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine (PCRM) of the United States, yesterday released a research report based on a six-month investigation, pointing out that although the rabies virus in Taiwan's ferret-badgers differs by 10% from the virus in China, this does not affect the efficacy of existing vaccines. Moreover, the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) had already informed the Council of Agriculture last year that animal experiments were not necessary for proof, yet the Council of Agriculture distorted this into support for animal experiments, "simply lying outright in public!" The experiments lack epidemic prevention and scientific necessity, and the Council of Agriculture should halt the plan and clearly explain the connection between the design of the animal experiments and epidemic prevention policy.

A public hearing will be held at 2:30 PM today
