Coastal Heavy Metal Pollution: Taoyuan Awarded the Green Oyster Award

Environmental groups yesterday (5/26) released the results of a survey on wild rock oysters along the west coast. D Industrial Zone in Taoyuan and Yong'an Fishing Harbor took the top two spots, with the copper content in rock oysters along the coast of D Industrial Zone rivaling that of foreign sites and reaching the highest peak among Taiwan's existing test data, 1.4 times the previous highest copper level recorded in Hsinchu's Xiangshan green oysters. The environmental groups demanded that the government control pollution at the source, supervise industrial wastewater discharge, and regulate total effluent discharge.

In response, the Fisheries Agency of the Council of Agriculture stated that wild rock oysters are contaminated with heavy metals and not suitable for consumption, but that monitoring results for farmed oysters are normal, "please, fellow citizens, eat with peace of mind."
