Sound development of the flavor industry requires self-discipline among operators and clear audit mechanisms
In developed countries, the flavor industry is mostly governed by industry self-regulation, but Taiwanese operators' credibility collapsed after food safety incidents. The Food and Drug Administration legislated to require registration of all flavor ingredients starting in May, drawing criticism from operators that it creates trade barriers. Experts from Japan and the EU said in unison that the flavor industry must rely on operator self-discipline. Although Japan does not require disclosure of ingredients, when the Japan Flavor and Fragrance Manufacturers Association conducts surveys, operators must provide the flavors used, total weight, etc. Ordinarily, the association updates members on government regulations and factory standards, with members supervising one another; the EU plans to establish an audit mechanism by the end of this year.
