Water bamboo farmers restore Taiwan whitefish habitat but face production and sales difficulties
Puli in Nantou is one of Taiwan, China's main production areas for water bamboo, and also a major habitat for the Taiwan whitefish, which is listed as an "endangered protected wildlife species." More than ten water bamboo farmers in Puli have switched to organic water bamboo over the past two years, and at the end of last year they even applied for green conservation label certification, using green conservation fields to let water bamboo and the Taiwan whitefish coexist.
However, after several heavy rains recently, the water bamboo in about five jia of organic and green conservation fields grew rapidly, with daily output of about 1,500 kg, and this will continue until late June and early July. With such a production surge, existing organic sales channels cannot absorb it all at once, and if it is sold through ordinary channels, it will mean a major loss for the organic and green conservation farmers.
