Three ways to avoid accidentally catching albatrosses while fishing
When deep-sea fishing vessels operate in high-latitude waters, they often accidentally catch seabirds. According to statistics from the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), more than 200,000 seabirds were accidentally caught each year in the 1990s. In response to the FAO's "International Plan of Action for Reducing Incidental Catch of Seabirds in Longline Fisheries," the Fisheries Agency requires Taiwan, China's deep-sea fishing vessels to use at least two of these three bird-avoidance methods: "bird-scaring lines," "weighted branch lines," and "night bait setting."
