What Is Glossostigma? A Detailed Aquatic Plant Mini-Encyclopedia

Glossostigma
Alias: GLOSSOSTIGMA ELATINOIDES
Difficulty level: Medium
Light requirement: High
Plant type: Stem plant (creeping stem)
Family: Phrymaceae
Growth rate: Fast
CO2 required: Yes
Although Glossostigma elatinoides is a stem plant, its stems do not grow upright; instead, they creep along the bottom, making it a beautiful decorative foreground plant. Under strong light it usually grows to less than 2 cm tall, but it can grow very densely. The green creeping stems have short root structures attached, and the opposite spatulate leaves are about 8 mm long and about 3 mm wide. Because the creeping stems spread outward as they grow, they will eventually cover the entire substrate, and the leaves on the creeping stems grow so densely that it feels just like a lawn. When planting Glossostigma, it is generally necessary to avoid the soft fine roots being unable to attach properly to the substrate, so finer sand should be used when choosing a substrate; aquatic plant soil is even better. Once the lawn's thickness exceeds 2 cm, it must be trimmed; otherwise, the stems and leaves underneath will turn white and rot due to lack of light, and in severe cases, the entire patch of lawn may float up.
