Clivia growing lopsided and getting "stuck arrows"? Doing this one thing now is the key

Fellow growers of clivia (Clivia miniata) all know that growing this plant well is no easy task: if the orientation isn't right, the leaves will grow crooked, and if the temperature isn't controlled properly, it will get "stuck arrows" during the blooming period. Today, Huahua has prepared prevention and solution methods for everyone, so take a quick look!
Clip on a small piece of paper, and the clivia leaves line up evenly
Many growers' clivia leaves just won't grow evenly, getting messier the bigger they get. Apart from varieties that are naturally uneven, we can still prevent and correct this~
1. Placement method
Clivia leaves have a strong tendency to grow toward light. If the leaves on both sides of the pot receive uneven light, the plant will inevitably lean toward the side with better light.
So when placing it normally, keep the leaf surface perpendicular to the light, and rotate the pot 180° every half month, otherwise the left and right sides will grow asymmetrically.
2. Manual intervention
For leaves that are still growing, we can use the paper shading method to adjust them. Of course, the most convenient material is the aluminum foil commonly found in the kitchen~
Cut the aluminum foil to a suitable width, fold it in half and wrap it around the side of the crooked leaf, covering just half the leaf's width, and secure it with a paper clip. Check the effect every day, and be careful not to over-correct.
This paper shading method, Huahua only recommends for adjusting leaf surfaces that are still growing. As for old leaves, expert growers can force-correct them.
For us beginners, it's better to just wait for them to age and fall off naturally! If you force-pull old leaves, they might snap with a crack if you're not careful~
Do this in autumn, and there will be no "stuck arrows" in winter
What is a "stuck arrow"?
It refers to when the clivia sends up its flower scape and the flower stem develops too short, so the flowers open before they can grow out beyond the leaves, greatly reducing the ornamental effect of the clivia.
Causes:
When the clivia's flower scape is emerging, the ambient temperature is below 15°C.
Lack of water or fertilizer causes poor flower stem growth.
How to prevent it:
1. If you want your clivia to bloom, give it appropriate low temperatures in autumn, best kept between 5°C and 10°C. As long as it's a bit cold but not frost-damaged, that's fine. In other words, it's better to bring it indoors late~
After moving it indoors, increase the day-night temperature difference,
and after the scape emerges, keep the temperature around 20°C.
Once you notice a possibility of stuck arrows, raise the temperature immediately.2. Before bringing it indoors, when temperatures are low, we should water at longer intervals. After moving it into a warm indoor space, we can water a bit more, especially
after the scape emerges,
we mustensure a sufficient water
supply.3、
Apply more liquid fertilizer
to prevent the plant from getting stuck arrows. In autumn, apply more fertilizer mainly containing phosphorus and potassium to promote scape emergence and blooming in clivia. For example, what Huahua uses is the blooming-promoting liquid fertilizer sold in the Huahua Select Mall~4. The last trick: once you find your clivia has stuck arrows, just
give it the dark room treatment
to encourage the flower scape to grow upward~Correct crooked leaves,
and prevent stuck arrows when blooming.
