Hydroponic flowers are very clean and easy to manage, and you don't have to worry about watering. But water culture often leads to yellowing leaves due to a lack of nutrients. Today, Lanyao will tell you how to keep plants healthy in water culture.

Yellow leaves on pothos in water culture

Pothos loves water very much. You can just cut a stem and put it in water to keep it alive. But pothos that has been in water culture for a long time often tends to develop yellow leaves.

1. Yellow leaves from insufficient nutrients

Many flower lovers, when growing pothos in water, simply add a little water and never use nutrient solution or additional fertilizer. This way, the pothos does not get enough nutrients for growth, and over time it easily turns yellow.

Solution:

When changing the water for pothos, add a little hydroponic nutrient solution. This can provide the nutrients pothos needs for growth, so it can grow vigorously and stay emerald green.

If you don't use nutrient solution, you can also dilute a nitrogen-phosphorus-potassium compound fertilizer with water at a concentration of more than 2000 times and spray it on the leaves as a top dressing. During the vigorous growing season, apply it about once every 10 days.

2. Water quality spoilage

Some of our flower lovers never change the water when growing pothos in water. Are you the same? The pothos that Lanyao grows in water doesn't like having its water changed either, but Lanyao doesn't add fertilizer to the water.

When there is no fertilizer in the water, the water quality generally does not spoil easily. But if nutrient solution is added, it is recommended to change the water regularly. Otherwise, with too many microorganisms in the water, water quality spoilage can easily cause pothos leaves to turn yellow, and even lead to root rot and a foul smell.

Solution:

When you notice the water becoming cloudy, change it promptly. Tap water should be left to stand for a day before use.

If root rot and a foul smell have already appeared, cut off the rotten parts and soak both the pothos and the hydroponic container in potassium permanganate water to sterilize and disinfect.

3. Temperature too low

These past few days, Lanyao noticed that the pothos in water culture was not as lively as before, because the temperature has dropped quite a lot these days and it clearly feels colder.

Low temperature is also a major cause of yellow leaves on pothos. Pothos is not cold-tolerant, and in water culture its cold tolerance is even worse.

Solution:

For pothos in water culture, in winter try to place it in a warm spot, or put the hydroponic bottle somewhere that can raise the water temperature, such as on a router or fish tank.

Yellow leaves on spider plant in water culture

Spider plant is very easy to keep alive in water culture, but it also easily develops yellow leaves. Yellow leaves on hydroponic spider plants are mostly due to the following reasons.

1. Light too dim

Spider plant likes light but cannot tolerate strong sun exposure, and it is a shade-tolerant plant. Therefore, when growing spider plant in water, it cannot be placed in a place with no light at all, or even in a too-dark place. Too little or too dim light will make the leaves of the spider plant turn pale yellow, become brittle, and break easily.

Solution:

Place the spider plant in a bright spot, preferably where it can get morning and evening light. Appropriate direct light can make the spider plant grow sturdier and more emerald green.

2. Not enough fertilizer

Spider plant grows quickly, so nutrient solution must be added in water culture. Failing to apply top dressing easily causes yellow leaves due to insufficient fertilizer.

Solution:

Add nutrient solution specially for water culture to the water, or spray the leaves with an aqueous solution of nitrogen-phosphorus-potassium compound fertilizer.

3. Too much water

Many flower lovers, when growing spider plant in water, just fill the water to the top without thinking, so that most of the spider plant is soaked in water. This easily prevents the roots from breathing and causes root rot and yellow leaves.

Solution:

When growing spider plant in water, do not add too much water. It is enough for the water to cover just 1/2 of the roots. Never soak the leaves of the spider plant in water.

Yellow leaves on lucky bamboo in water culture

Lucky bamboo bought on the market generally has no roots. When we buy it, we need to grow the roots ourselves, but during water culture it also easily develops yellow leaves for the following reasons.

1. Fertilizing too early

Newly bought lucky bamboo has no roots. At this time, its ability to absorb fertilizer is poor, so it should not be fertilized in the early stage of cultivation. Otherwise, it easily causes fertilizer burn and can also easily lead to infection of the cut end.

Solution:

Do not fertilize before roots grow in water culture, and use a sharp knife to recut the lower end of the newly bought lucky bamboo at a 45-degree angle. This can increase the water uptake of the lucky bamboo and promote root growth.

2. Not changing the water

Many flower lovers do not like to change the water when growing lucky bamboo in water. Actually, after it has grown roots, not changing the water is not a big problem. But in the early stage of water culture, the water still needs to be changed regularly. If the water is not changed, the increase in microorganisms in the water can easily cause infection of the wound, leading to rot and failure to grow roots.

Solution:

At the beginning of water culture, replace with clean water every 3 days and wash the hydroponic container.

3. Unsuitable lighting

If you want lucky bamboo to grow well, it also needs a certain amount of light. If the light is too dim or too strong, it will cause the leaves of the lucky bamboo to turn yellow.

Solution:

Place the lucky bamboo in a spot with bright, indirect light, away from electrical appliances.

4. Temperature too low

Lucky bamboo is also very afraid of cold. If the temperature is too low, it will likewise cause the leaves of the lucky bamboo to turn yellow and wilt.

Solution

In winter, find ways to keep it warm. You can also switch the hydroponic lucky bamboo to soil culture before winter begins, which is more helpful for overwintering.
