As the saying goes: A man is iron, rice is steel, and you'll be famished if you skip a meal. But vegetable prices rise just like that, and the red banknotes vanish just like that, which really hurts a bit. Want to grow your own vegetables and be self-sufficient, but have no flower pots and no space? Don't worry, Huahua will teach you to grow vegetables in mineral water bottles. You eat nutritious and healthy food, the growing takes up no space, and the money you save can even buy flowers!

Preparations for the mineral water bottles

First, we need to prepare 30 mineral water bottles, with a 550ml capacity. Collect a few when you drink water normally, or pick some up by the roadside to take home, and you can also be a little environmental hero for once.

Besides preparing the mineral water bottles, you also need to have scissors, a utility knife, a lighter, and nylon zip ties (the kind that cost 1 yuan for 100, or you can use sturdy string if you don't have them).

Then it's time to cut the bottles! In order to make every bottle cut at the same height, we can first cut a model: a 45° diagonal cut, with the height being half of the mineral water bottle.

Using the model as a standard, cut all 30 mineral water bottles with the knife, then use a lighter to burn the cut edges so the bottle opening is smooth and won't scratch the vegetables.

Of course, if you have this kind of old-fashioned iron at home, that's even better. Heat the iron, hold the cut mineral water bottle on it for a moment, and the sharp cut edges will naturally become smooth.

In the middle position of the cut mineral water bottle, poke two holes for threading string. You can heat a nail with a lighter, and it will easily poke small holes. During the process, be careful of burning your hands.

If you're a flower lover who isn't good at judging how much water to use, Huahua suggests poking several holes in the bottom of the bottle in the same way, so you won't need to worry even if you water too much~

Fill with soil and plant vegetables, self-sufficient

After the mineral water bottles are prepared, we can fill them with soil and install them. Here, it's time to bring out the grid rack that lets plastic bottles grow vegetables without taking up space.

Fill the cut mineral water bottles with planting soil, thread the nylon zip ties through the holes we made earlier, and tie them to the grid rack. Our vertical vegetable rack is complete.

Sow seeds in each mineral water bottle. Sprinkle a few seeds of spinach, cilantro, and lettuce, cover with a thin layer of soil, water thoroughly, and then you can just sit back and wait for them to sprout and be harvested!

Look at these delightful vegetables, each one living in its own single room. Less than a month after sowing, they can be eaten, and after eating you can continue to plant more. Huahua has decided to set up a vegetable rack at home too.

If conditions allow, when filling the soil you can also mix in a little farmyard manure, imitating the rural method of growing vegetables. This can make the vegetables grow robustly, and there are no pesticides or chemical fertilizers at all.
