Many friends have some doubts: why do the leaves of the potted plants I grow get fewer and fewer, while the branches grow taller and taller, looking very weak and spindly? How can this situation be improved?

Actually, these situations are all caused by an unsuitable care environment or failure to supplement fertilizer and water in time. Of course, one key point has also been missed: pruning. Plants grown in pots also need regular pruning or pinching of the tips. Doing so can make the plant grow more branches, which helps promote the plant to fill a large pot faster.

Below, I will introduce how to promote continuous branching in plants so that the branches and leaves grow more vigorously.

Take the potted fragrant plectranthus as an example. Fragrant plectranthus, also called "yimoxiang" (Plectranthus amboinicus), is the most common potted aromatic herb plant indoors. It grows especially easily and likes a warm and humid environment all year round. The care location should remain ventilated and well lit, and with regular watering, it can maintain a good growth state.

Some friends' potted fragrant plectranthus tends to develop branches that keep growing longer while the leaves keep dropping. Sometimes the branches also keep lengthening and the spacing between branches and leaves keeps increasing. This condition is leggy growth.

The reason plants develop tender branches and leaves, and potted plants look especially delicate and weak, showing this kind of leggy growth, is excessive watering or insufficient light.

When caring for potted fragrant plectranthus, pay attention to regular watering. In spring and summer, the soil can be kept moist, and appropriate air humidity should also be maintained. Fragrant plectranthus does not like an especially dry environment, and the soil must not stay dry for a long time, otherwise it easily drops leaves, and the old leaves near the bottom will also keep turning yellow.

The environment for caring for fragrant plectranthus should provide more light every day. About 4 to 8 hours of scattered light per day is enough. In summer, avoid scorching sun or prolonged direct sunlight.

If you want to promote fragrant plectranthus to grow more branches, you need to pinch the tips regularly, especially in the peak growing seasons of spring and summer. When its main stem reaches about 15 cm, remove the tender buds at the top. You can cut them off directly with sharp scissors, and after cutting, avoid getting the wound wet.

After one or two weeks, more branches will grow from the cut at the top. This helps produce more branches and leaves. After these branches grow to 15 cm, pinch the tips again. Grown this way, fragrant plectranthus will quickly fill a large pot.

Potted fragrant plectranthus also needs regular supplementation of fertilizer and water. In spring and summer, apply a diluted organic fertilizer once every 2 to 3 weeks. The concentration must not be too high. After fertilizing, spray the leaves with water once to avoid fertilizer residue on the branches and leaves. After the weather turns cool in autumn, stop fertilizing.
