How is vernalization done for orchids? These details need attention

A fellow orchid grower asked me: how exactly is vernalization done for orchids? Setting aside all those technical terms from the books and speaking from my own experience, that is the farmer's way, and it is also the only ability I have. Setting aside all those technical terms from the books and speaking from my own experience, that is the farmer's way, and it is also the only ability I have. What I am talking about here is Cymbidium goeringii and Cymbidium faberi, both of which need vernalization. Vernalization can make the flower buds stop growing, accumulate energy and then bloom again at a certain temperature, building up strength for a breakthrough and producing the fragrance of a gentleman.

At the same time, the energy accumulation of vernalization is also a form of self-protection for the species. To put it vividly, the orchid knows it is about to bloom and set seed, and next year it still has to send up new shoots right after. So if it does not accumulate energy and build up reserves during this period, it will very likely damage its old reserves the following year. Therefore vernalization of orchids is essential and is also a very important link, not only for blooming but also so the orchid plant can continue to grow healthily.

Orchids in their natural state do not need a clear distinction between vernalization temperature and time; just let the seasons decide. If vernalizing artificially, note that after vernalization you must not immediately move them to a place without sunlight.

In January 2016, an orchid grower from the county town obtained a pot of multi-budded Cymbidium goeringii from Haoshe Nongfu; in fact it had already been fully vernalized. He ran a hotel, so he put the orchid pot on the hotel bar counter. You can imagine the ventilation conditions in winter in an indoor place without sunlight. As a result, after a month the flower buds showed no movement, and later they were found to be slowly turning black; with a light touch they broke off. It turned out they had long since blasted.

Regarding artificial vernalization, Haoshe Nongfu believes orchid growers need to pay attention to the following:

1. The end of the vernalization period can be arranged by yourself. As long as there is more than one month of full vernalization, you can set the end of vernalization according to your own blooming time. Of course, the premise is not to suffer freezing damage.

2. During vernalization there must be sunlight, and after vernalization ends there must still be sunlight. Sunlight is the indispensable miracle medicine for orchids to bloom and bloom well.

3. No matter when, the ventilation requirement for orchids is even higher than that for water and fertilizer. This is the top priority; without good ventilation it is impossible to grow orchids well.

Fellow orchid growers can refer to this for guidance. If there are any other questions, you are welcome to leave a comment in the comment section.
