The Aeonium feast is here, be careful - you might get a nosebleed from looking.

Admire these stunning Aeonium gardens, learn the basic care knowledge for Aeonium, and let you have your own Aeonium garden sooner!

Aeonium was undoubtedly the hottest succulent on the market in 2017-2018, and there are more and more players and enthusiasts who love Aeonium.

Aeonium has strong adaptability and easily develops its striking appearance. Its ever-changing appearance through the four seasons is exactly where the charm of Aeonium lies.

Aeonium's habits: Aeonium is a succulent of the Crassulaceae family, genus Aeonium. As a winter-growing type, Aeonium prefers a warm, dry environment, needs ample light for growth, is drought-tolerant, not cold-tolerant, and slightly tolerant of partial shade.

Autumn and winter are its vigorous growth periods, but for Aeonium, the time they develop their appearance (that is, their most beautiful time) is April, May, and June each year. Simply put, Aeonium is a winter-growing type, and autumn, winter, and spring are the seasons when Aeonium grows like crazy

In spring, Aeonium will show a beautiful appearance, in summer it enters dormancy and stops growing, but summer is its most beautiful season.

In other words:In autumn, the Aeonium army gradually wakes up from dormancy one after another and begins to grow, so in autumn and winter most Aeonium will fade to varying degrees, the leaves will open up, and they will start growing like crazy. At this time, Aeonium is naturally not as beautiful as in spring and during summer dormancy.

But dear succulent friends, if your Aeonium has become ugly, with all the leaves opened up, the color faded, and growing like a cabbage, etc., it exactly shows that your Aeonium's root system is very good and very healthy, and has completely awakened from dormancy.

If all the other Aeonium have awakened and started growing, but a few Aeonium have not awakened, no matter how you water them they do not grow, the leaves are soft, and some even have wrinkled stems, with leaves wrapped up, short and tight, maintaining their summer state, then you should pay attention. Perhaps the Aeonium's root system has not developed well and it cannot awaken from dormancy. You should pull it out and check whether the roots are dried up, necrotic, or showing other poor development. You need to trim off the bad roots, let them dry, and then change the soil and repot.

The most suitable temperature for Aeonium growth is 20-25°C. In winter it can tolerate a low temperature of 5°C. Below 5°C, leaves are prone to softening and falling off.

The temperature requirements for raising Aeonium in autumn and winter: in winter it can tolerate a low temperature of 5°C.Below 5°C, leaves are prone to softening and falling off.But based on my experience, generally there is no big problem above 0°C. Here in Chengdu, all my Aeonium are kept in full outdoor cultivation mode!

Watering

If you don't know how to care for Aeonium, the leaves wilt when you don't water, and the leaves drop as soon as you water. The original large heads all become small heads. Although they grow into clusters, they look very ugly. So how should you water to make your Aeonium more photogenic?

Aeonium grows in cool seasons, with spring and autumn being its main growth stages, so the amount of watering should be appropriately increased. If kept indoors, the environment is relatively dry, so don't worry about water and give a little more appropriately.

Water boldly. Each time you water, water thoroughly, that is, until water seeps out from the bottom of the pot, and when you hear a sizzling water-absorbing sound from the soil, there is a feeling of complete satisfaction. Not only should you water, but you should also mist in time. You can use a sprayer to mist every day or every other evening to maintain humidity. Once Aeonium drinks its fill, it will definitely grow quickly.

Aeonium begins to go dormant when the temperature approaches 30°C. In summer's high temperatures, a large number of leaves will fall. At this time, care requires slowly reducing the amount of water, and it cannot be exposed to strong sun. In summer, cultivate it in partial shade. You can wet the soil at night, but make sure the soil can dry out the next day. Move the Aeonium outdoors to a ventilated, shaded place for care, and frequently sprinkle water around the plant to lower the temperature and increase humidity.

During the entire high-temperature period, you cannot give no water at all. According to the dryness of the potting soil, give a little water appropriately. It does not need to be watered thoroughly, and when watering, be careful not to wet the leaves.

In winter, when the temperature is suitable, Aeonium can still grow normally, but more slowly than in spring and autumn. At this time, watering should be determined according to the condition of the plant. If the potting soil is too dry and sunlight is ample, you can water. If the temperature is lower and light conditions are poor, pay attention to keeping it warm and reduce watering. In the winter in the north, in indoor spaces with heating, this plant will also grow like crazy. At this time, you should appropriately strengthen water and fertilizer management.

In autumn and winter, when the temperature is suitable, watering should be determined according to the condition of the plant. If the potting soil is too dry and sunlight is ample, you can water. If the temperature is lower and light conditions are poor, pay attention to keeping it warm and reduce watering.

Can Aeonium be exposed to rain?

The answer is: in autumn it absolutely can. Aeonium has very strong vitality. In spring and autumn, it can both be exposed to rain, and rain in spring and autumn helps Aeonium grow quickly and also has a remarkable sterilizing effect. In winter, when the temperature is below 5°C, provide appropriate rain protection to prevent frostbite.

Soil requirements for growing Aeonium

Use fertile culture soil with good drainage for planting. You can use different garden soils mixed with some peat, vermiculite, and perlite; as long as it is breathable, it is about right. If the soil is not breathable or not fertile enough, the leaf color of Aeonium will become lighter, appearing purple with green, which is very ugly.

Here I will introduce my own soil mixing ratio for reference only. Many people think that using all granular soil is best, but in fact it is not recommended to use all granular soil for planting. Peat soil and nutrient soil are essential, otherwise unbalanced nutrition will affect the healthy growth of the plant

1. Soil mix for Aeonium seedlings:Nutrient soil (peat soil) 60% + river sand 10% + granular soil 30% (the granular soil is mainly maifanshi, volcanic rock, vermiculite) + slow-release fertilizer (effect lasts up to 3 months)

2. Soil mix for mature Aeonium:Nutrient soil (peat soil) 40% + granular soil 60% (the granular soil is mainly maifanshi, volcanic rock, vermiculite) + slow-release fertilizer (effect lasts up to 3 months)

Explanation of soil mixing ratio:The deeper the layer, the greater the proportion of granular soil. Aeonium is commonly planted in tall pots. It is recommended to use coarse ceramic granules as the bottom layer, which has good water permeability and accounts for about 15% of the pot. The size of the coarse ceramic granules should be adjusted according to the size of the pot. The shallower the layer and the closer to the upper part of the pot, the greater the proportion of peat soil, to supply nutrients to the Aeonium roots in time.

Looking at these stunning Aeonium gardens, do not doubt that you cannot grow beautiful Aeonium. This variety is different from other succulents. Most other succulents are very difficult to grow into the extreme state of Yunnan's cheat-mode region in most areas, but Aeonium can.

No matter where you are, whether you grow on a balcony or outdoors, Aeonium can easily be grown into an extreme state!

All the Aeonium garden photos in the article come from succulent friends all over the country, including Chengdu (the region with the least sunlight), enclosed outdoor cultivation in Ya'an (known as the Rain City), very hot summer regions in Zhejiang, very cold winter regions in the northeast, Xinjiang, Guangdong and Fujian, etc., Shandong, and of course Yunnan's cheat-mode region

In short, Aeonium is suitable for cultivation in all regions of the country, and can grow into a beautiful Aeonium garden,Watching it grow day by day and watching it become more beautiful day by day is a sense of accomplishment and happiness!
