Camellia is one of China's ten most famous flowers, known for its deep green, glossy leaves and its large, brightly colored blooms, and its many flower colors make it hard to resist. Although there are many camellia varieties, the ones we usually grow and see are just five categories: the first is the Camellia japonica variety group, the second is the Yunnan camellia group, the third is the sasanqua group, the fourth is the species group, and the fifth is the hybrid group. Most of those grown at home now are Camellia japonica varieties and Yunnan camellia varieties. The characteristics of Camellia japonica varieties are that the leaves are neither too large nor too small, with good gloss, and the flower colors, sizes and shapes vary greatly, and their adaptability is much stronger than other camellias. The leaves of Yunnan camellia varieties are much larger than those of other camellias, and the leaf surface is very rough, but their flowers are the largest among all camellias, and some can reach more than 20 cm.

Camellia flower forms are also divided into single, semi-double and double. Single-form flowers are mostly tubular with fewer petals; semi-doubles include the semi-double type, lotus type, five-star type and pinecone type, with as many as dozens of petals; doubles are divided into chrysanthemum type, hydrangea type, rose type, crown type and other flower types, with more than 50 petals. But among the many camellias there are many fragrant camellias, and the strongly fragrant varieties include Xiang Taiyang, Crimsen Robe Peony, Xiang Ni'ao, Xiang Shen, Liexiang and so on. Among them the best-smelling is Xiang Taiyang, whose flowers give off a very pleasant apple fragrance, and it is the camellia with the best fragrance known so far.

Among camellias there is also no lack of many famous and rare varieties, such as: Shiba Xueshi, Wuse Chidan, sasanqua, Hua Xianzi, Huangguan and so on, but for home growing there is no need to pursue famous and rare varieties.
