A rainforest-style Chinese persimmon bonsai sold for 100,000 yuan!

The Chinese persimmon (Diospyros cathayensis) has a strong, upright stem that twists naturally, with a color like iron, making it suitable for tree bonsai. Thanks to its unique varietal advantages, it can be planted across the north and south of China. The Chinese persimmon blooms pale yellow flowers in April, with flower shapes resembling bottles and a fragrance like orchids, hence it is also called "bottle orchid flower." After flowering, it sets fruit in May. In autumn, the green fruit turns tangerine-red or orange-yellow, shaped like a pellet, hence the name "golden pellet" (Chinese persimmon). Its fruit remains on the tree through the following spring without falling; the leaves are dark green, leathery and glossy, making it an ornamental plant beautiful in fruit, flower and leaf alike.

Yang Jiaxiu from Dazhou, Sichuan: The Chinese persimmon is very beautiful, especially during the fruiting period. This is the Dazhou hilly small-shrub Chinese persimmon. The Chinese persimmon likes warm and humid climates. It is relatively shade-tolerant, has strong sprouting ability, and tolerates pruning and shaping.

Because the Chinese persimmon is dioecious, potted Chinese persimmons either bear fruit or do not. If analyzed by tree shape, trunk bark color, leaf shape, leaf color, or leaf veins, the sex of the stump cannot be accurately determined; only by observing the flowers of the Chinese persimmon can male and female be accurately distinguished. Male plants produce more than two flowers under each leaf bud, the flowers shaped like small lanterns, with no claws at the flower base, and when the flowers open, male stamens and pollen are visible. Female plants produce only one to two flowers under each leaf bud, larger in form than male flowers, with four leaf-like claws wrapping the flower center in a triangular shape; after blooming, the claws open like persimmon flowers, and young fruit can be seen inside the flowers.
