Autumn and Winter Care Methods for Gardenia and Jasmine: Strong Branches to Survive the Winter

The weather lately has really been getting colder and colder! Many flower lovers are starting to worry about their plants at home, especially those with gardenias and jasmine, afraid that with one wrong move, there will be yellowing leaves and leaf drop. Don't worry, today Huahua brings you a complete set of autumn and winter care methods to keep them safe through the winter.

Sufficient Light Makes Gardenias Grow Strong

1. Light

Gardenias (Gardenia jasminoides) like sufficient natural light, especially in autumn, with at least 8 hours of sunlight per day to benefit the plant's growth and development and its overwintering~

2. Temperature

Gardenias will suffer cold damage below 5°C! During winter care, keep the temperature at 6~10°C, and preferably not lower than 5°C~

3. Watering

In autumn, as the temperature gradually drops, for watering, just water once the soil surface turns white, so that the new branches grown that year can grow strong and improve the survival rate through the winter.

In winter, focus mainly on dry cultivation. The plant is in a dormant state, and too much watering easily causes root rot; just water when we notice the leaves are somewhat drooping and wilting.

4. Fertilize Less

In late autumn, temperatures vary greatly between different regions. If the regional temperature is above 15°C, you can apply one round of a complete compound fertilizer with nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium; below 15°C, stop fertilizing!

5. Enjoying Flowers in Winter

Some flower lovers in the north can also enjoy gardenia blooms in winter. This is because the indoor heating temperature is very high, combined with the large temperature difference between day and night.

If you want it to bloom in winter, Huahua suggests appropriately applying additional fertilizer, of course, only when the room temperature is very high~

Although Jasmine Fears the Cold, It Should Also Be Brought Indoors Late

1. Light

Speaking of jasmine's demand for light, Huahua thinks no other flower or plant can compare with it. In autumn, it should be kept under full-day sunlight even more~

2. Temperature

Jasmine is a plant that cannot tolerate low temperatures, but in order to let it better adapt to temperature changes, it should also be brought indoors later; it can be moved indoors after Frost's Descent (Shuangjiang).

3. Watering

For watering, Huahua suggests everyone water at noon when the temperature is higher, and the amount of water should be relatively reduced. If moved indoors for care, reduce the watering amount by about 30% compared with outdoor care.

4. No Fertilizing

In late autumn, Huahua does not suggest fertilizing or pruning anymore! As the temperature gradually drops, the absorption capacity of jasmine's root system weakens, and improper fertilizing easily causes fertilizer damage~

5. No Pruning

In late autumn, it is best not to prune! Letting jasmine store nutrients well and safely overwinter is the key point~

6. Enjoying Flowers in Winter

Jasmine blooming in winter is not uncommon, but each flower does not bloom for long and soon turns purple and withers. Huahua does not suggest doing this; let jasmine rest well in winter and save up strength so it can grow even better the next year~
