How to open a profitable small shop and live a simple, happy life

If you don't work for someone else, what else can you do?
Are you willing to spend your whole life working for someone else?
During lunch, the topic came up casually.
@Tingting: (very excited) Of course I don't want to. Working for others gets you nowhere. My father was a company employee who worked his whole life, and it was just enough to keep the family fed and put me through university. I'm very grateful to my father, but I want my children to have a better life.
@Dage: (helplessly) Slaving away at one job, you can't make big money. After working for 5 years, I've saved up a bit through hard work, but I still can't keep up with Guangzhou's housing prices. I'm more and more afraid to bring up marriage with my girlfriend. Putting money in the bank, it shrinks year after year. I really want to make money soon and marry her.
@Xiaomin: Of course I won't work for someone else my whole life. Our family's clothing store makes about 50,000 in profit a month. I came out to study for 3 months first, then I'll go back and open a few more.
To be honest, having a fixed income every month, not worrying about money, and being able to do what I love - that's the life I want.
As soon as Xiaomin finished speaking, everyone was super envious of her, asking how she opened a small shop and how she made so much money.
She said, opening a shop - it's not hard to say it's hard, and not easy to say it's easy. I used to fumble around too, losing money while running it, until I met my teacher online. Only then did I realize, there are methods to follow when opening a shop。
Xiaomin also specifically reminded everyone:If you want to open a shop, you must learn from Brother Sen.
It turns out her teacher isthe father of small shop operations,Wang Sen, everyone calls himBrother Sen。
Brother Sen says, if you're willing, I can teach you step by step,to open a profitable small shop and live a simple, happy life.
He has opened a bar,a coffee shop, a noodle restaurant, a small guesthouse, a flower shop......He isthe principal of Cenci Dream School, and his trainees are spread across the country,5 yearshe has helped1,381 peopleone after another to live a simple, free life as small shop owners, with students everywhere.
He is also a bestselling author. Over the past six years he has written: "I Just Want to Open a Tiny Cafe", "Because of You, So Cenci", "This Is How Dreams Come True", "The Aftermath Is Not Over", "There's an Art to Opening a Shop", with cumulative sales of nearlya million。
His debut work "I Just Want to Open a Tiny Cafe" ranked in the top three of Amazon's fashion and lifestyle book rankings for three consecutive years.
"The first book sold over 500,000 copies"
Brother Sen proudly says:"In almost any coffee shop in China, you can see my book."
01
He resigned from his position as company general manager and opened 1 small shop
Later 1 became 16
"Opening a coffee shop, every morning sunlight streams through the glass, spilling onto the counter, brewing a cup of coffee for yourself, ready to welcome guests.
In the afternoon when it's quiet, sitting on the wooden floor outside the door, reading a book, writing a few words."
This is Brother Sen's life as a small shop owner.
Brother Sen, who opened 16 shops in 11 years, each shop making a monthly profit ranging from 10,000 to 50,000, enough for him to live a simple yet prosperous life.
He has secured his daily bread while still keeping poetry and distant lands. The life we've been dreaming of, someone else has already achieved.
(Brother Sen's small shops)
Looking at Brother Sen, who seems like a winner in life, you might think he's a rich second generation who grew up in a wealthy family, which is why he could so easily live the life he wanted.
Actually, that's not the case.
Brother Sen was also born into an ordinary family. Like you, he followed the routine - studying, working, giving his all for life, often coming home late at night when his family and children were already asleep. The next day, he'd set out early again to meet clients.
He climbed step by step, and at 38 he finally became a company general manager. But then misfortune struck.
His 66-year-old mother suddenly passed away. The closest person, gone without any warning. For a long time, Brother Sen couldn't accept this blow.He began to stop and ask himself, working so hard - what kind of life did he actually want?
He resigned, rested for a full year, and took the time to travel around and see the world.
Riding a bicycle, he traveled around Taiwan, China, savoring the many people, things, and small shops in this vast world.
He discovered a phenomenon: in Japan and Taiwan, China, within 1 kilometer of residential areas, there are many small, beautiful shops. Not only is the quality good, but customer loyalty is very high. Even for a shop of just a few square meters, customers stream in endlessly.
But domestically, in the luxury residential community where Brother Sen lived for 8 years, within 3 kilometers nearby, he couldn't find a single small shop he'd want to keep coming back to. After talking with friends around him, he found that everyone wished for such a small shop, but it was never available. Brother Sen believed, this was a potential opportunity.
He decided to open such a small coffee shop.
According to the original plan, opening a shop - including renovation, rent, materials, labor - would require at least 200,000 in investment. But in the end, Brother Senonly spent 30,000 to get the 200,000 shop up and running.
There was a small bar that was empty during the day and only opened at night. He negotiated with the owner to rent the bar during the daytime, and with a little decoration, turned it into a coffee shop. The rent used to be 5,000 a month, now it was only 2,100. Plus renovation only cost 30,000.
Just like that, coffee shop by day, bar by night.1 year later, besides earning back his capital, Brother Sen made an additional profit of over 100,000.
Although it was only his first time opening a shop in his life, Brother Sen discovered that doing business really isn't hard.
02
He says, business is not hard at all
Whatever people lack, that's what you sell
If making money on your first shop is luck, then making money on 16 shops in a row - that's real ability.
Brother Sen's first shop has been running for 11 years now.
The vast majority of his customers are "regulars". Many customers tell Brother Sen that if they don't come to his shop on any given day, they feel like the day is incomplete.
Why is that?
Brother Sen says, business really isn't hard - whatever people need, that's what you sell.In today's society, don't people lack a sense of security? Lack genuine conversation? Lack warm smiles? Lack quality interaction?
If you package all of these together with your products and sell them to customers, will business be hard?
In Brother Sen's shop, you'll see:
Every day when customers come in, the shop manager warmly invites them to sit down, personally pours them a cup of hot tea, and then takes their order slowly.
When they leave, the shop manager walks them to the door and says with a smile: Take care.
Sometimes, the veteran police officer on patrol comes by at noon, has a cup of coffee, takes a nap, and chats with them.
On weekends, they hold book clubs, gathering everyone to make friends through books.
When the shop is full, if a new customer comes in, regular customers will voluntarily give up their seats to the new customer, because they can see the owner every day. They love this shop and want the owner to make money.
If it were you, would you like a small shop like this?
And so, each of Brother Sen's shops quickly spread by word of mouth. Friends bring friends, coming to the shop to chat and daydream. To them, this place is like a second home.
There was a 29-year-old young man named Xie Bing. He had worked in Wuhan for 5 years, when the company suddenly transferred him back to the Beijing headquarters. One day, he came to the cafe carrying a small box containing plants he had cared for over 2 years, and asked Brother Sen to help take care of these plants.
These plants are still being kept in Brother Sen's shop today.
I asked Brother Sen, so if customers feel at home, then a small shop can make money?
Brother Sen smiled and shook his head. To open a small shop, besides this, there are quite a few other things to pay attention to.
Brother Sen casually gave 2 examples:
1. For choosing a shop location, must you choose a place with high foot traffic?
Actually, no. The key isthe rent ceiling principle.
Shop location should consider the area, but it's not the most important factor; The most important principle when finding a storefront is rent, rent, rent, and only then location.
Many people choose a shop location without data support, just going by a gut feeling about whether the storefront is good or not. In the end, they really do end up working for the landlord, or even closing down;
Brother Sen told me, to open a shop, you need to research other similar shops. What is theiraverage revenue level? 20% of this month's revenue is your shop's rent ceiling.
For example, coffee shops nationwide sell an average of 25 cups per day per shop. Then the monthly revenue is approximately 25 cups * 20 yuan * 30 days = 15,000 yuan. So the rent can be at most 3,000 yuan (15,000 * 20%).
What if the rent is very expensive? The answer is,you'd rather sacrifice shop space, to ensure profitability.
2. Find a professional designer to create the trendiest design?
NO !
Brother Sen emphasizes, the small shops we open don't need to hire a design company. You can absolutely do the design yourself, then find a construction team to implement it;
Secondly, the most important thing in renovation is creativity, because the more creative it is, the more money you save. With cheap materials you can create very creative effects;
How to learn from other shops and convey your design ideas to the construction team - we'll tell you all of this in the course, creating a highly creative small shop with the least amount of money.
03
One person's dream come true
ignited the dreams of millions
Later, Brother Sen applied this set of small shop operation concepts and methods to open small bars, small guesthouses, small bookstores and 16 other shops, never tiring of it.
Brother Sen shared these ideas online, and more and more people learned about Brother Sen's shop-opening story. They all asked Brother Sen online, how do you get a small shop up and running?
Later, after answering so many questions, these ideas came together into a book - "I Just Want to Open a Tiny Cafe". The original intention of this book was just to fulfill a dream, but unexpectedly,it sold 500,000 copies in no time, and he accidentally became a bestselling author.(It's said that before Mo Yan won the Nobel Prize in Literature, his books had only sold 200,000 copies)
Next, he successively published "Because of You, So Cenci", "This Is How Dreams Come True", "The Aftermath Is Not Over", "There's an Art to Opening a Shop"....
Since so many people kept asking how to open their own small shop, the classic line from Stephen Chow's "Kung Fu" - "Want to learn? I'll teach you" - always lingered in Brother Sen's mind.
So, Brother Sen established a school, to share these years of experience and insights into social consumption with friends interested in opening shops.

Over 5 years,he has trained over 3,000 trainees, and 1,381 trainees have successfully opened shops one after another. Almost every week, a new trainee shop opens its doors to welcome customers.
Trainee shops'survival rate exceeds 90%. According to incomplete statistics, about10% of the trainees' shops have also opened branches.
(Shops opened by trainees across the country)
"It's so beyond my expectations that one person's dream coming true could actually drive so many dreams to come true."
In order not to let everyone's trust down and to verify and iterate the latest operating model, over these 11 years, Brother Sen has spentseveral months each year going out to Japan, Taiwan, Europe and America, these developed countries or cities, studying their ways of doing business, bringing them back home, and passing them on to more trainees.
"USA - Bulk Western food ingredient supermarket"
"Taiwan, China - Beef noodle shop"
"Japan - Various small shops"
While learning foreign business concepts on the one hand and practising them at home on the other, constantly verifying and constantly iterating, he summed up a set ofeffective, applicable to all industries, and executable even by ordinary peopleshop-opening strategies。
There was a trainee named Hua Zi. He opened a cafe in his hometown of Changsha, but ran it poorly. Before coming to the class, he had already prepared for the worst, planning to go back and close the cafe.
Hua Zi likes reading and likes music. When he first opened this cafe, he hoped to attract some like-minded people to come. Unexpectedly, the customers in the shop were all there playing cards, chatting loudly, and even picking their toenails. All of this was completely the opposite of what he had expected.
After taking Brother Sen's 20-day course on opening a small shop, he finally understood his own problems, went back and ran it again, and from then on it took on a completely new look.
He knew that to attract friends on the same wavelength, he needed to hold some activities that would appeal to them, for example:Book clubs, unplugged folk music parties.Gradually, the companions nearby who were like him all liked coming to his place. He said,Brother Sen's operating philosophy brought his shop back from the dead.

Over 11 years, Brother Sen published 5 books on opening shops, which were widely praised. His online sharing has also been recognised by a vast number of netizens.

"Being yourself seems like a very difficult thing in our society, but once you can only be yourself, that is a kind of happiness."
Seeing many netizens online say that they really wanted to listen to Brother Sen's course, but because of time and location, they had never been able to fulfil that wish.
