I remember many years ago, by a chance opportunity, I admired camellias blooming across the mountains and fields, and Huahua fell in love with them. I do not know if everyone, like Huahua, is quite fond of camellias? Now that October has arrived, it is camellia-buying season again, so Huahua will introduce to everyone how we should choose and care for them!

Beginners should choose seedlings like this and gradually become experts

1. Variety

There are quite a few camellia varieties, and beginners may feel quite lost when choosing. Here Huahua suggests that new camellia growers start with older varieties that are highly adaptable and easy to manage, such as Chidan and Hongluzhen.

2. With soil

When buying camellias, the first thing we should look at is the root system. Huahua suggests that everyone not buy bare-root seedlings; it is best if they come with a soil ball, as that makes them easier to survive.

Only when potted like this is the survival rate high

1. Flower pot

For the flower pot, we can use a clay tile pot or a ceramic pot. Do not choose a container that is too large or too deep, otherwise there will be too much soil, it will not dry easily, and water will easily accumulate. Generally, choosing a flower pot whose diameter is half the width of the camellia's crown is fine.

2. Soil

For soil, we can use equal amounts of leaf mold, compost soil and sandy soil mixed together.

3. Potting

Before potting and filling with soil, it is best to place a layer of coarse coal cinder at the bottom of the pot as a drainage layer (to prevent water accumulation), and then fill in the prepared growing soil.

Place the seedling with its original soil in the middle of the flower pot, continue filling with soil, and during this time lightly pat the pot wall so the roots and soil combine tightly. Water thoroughly and place it in a spot without direct sunlight to care for it for 1 month.

Here Huahua wants to remind everyone that if the potted camellia was bought directly from a flower market and already has flower buds, Huahua suggests it is best to repot after flowering, otherwise the buds will easily drop.

Daily care in autumn and winter, buds pop out vigorously

1. Light

Now the intensity of light is gradually weakening, so we can place the potted plant on a balcony for care. Note that camellias have a strong sense of direction, so do not frequently move their position.

2. Watering

Autumn is the period when camellia flower buds swell. Keep the potting soil moist. Water once the soil surface looks slightly white. Rainwater is preferable; tap water should be left to stand for 1 day before use.

3. Fertilizing

In autumn, for camellias, mainly phosphorus and potassium fertilizers are applied. You can mix some bone meal into the potting soil and spray the leaf surface once a week with 0.2% monopotassium phosphate.

For gardening friends in the north, where the soil tends to be alkaline, you can water the flowers with ferrous sulfate diluted in water, once a month, to prevent iron deficiency in camellias.

4. Bud thinning

Generally keep 1 flower bud per branch. Carry out bud thinning on a sunny day. Use scissors to cut off 4/5 of the flower bud; the remaining 1/5 will wither and fall off on its own. This avoids us having to pull the buds off by force and damage the plant.

4. Protecting flowers during the flowering period

During the camellia flowering period, we must ensure the temperature is between 10~15°C so the flowers can fully open, large in size and vivid in color; otherwise the flowers may easily fade early or fail to open.
