Mining - clay refining

(Kaolin clay from Gaoling Village, Jingdezhen)

All porcelain of Shopkeeper Wang Porcelain uses clay from premium kaolin clay of Gaoling Village. We strictly select every piece of raw ore, then use manual iron hammers to break it, then use water-powered trip-hammers to pound it into powder, then wash it to remove excess impurities, and after settling, form it into brick-shaped clay blocks.

From extracting the raw stone to grinding, washing, removing impurities, kneading, and de-airing, the entire clay-refining process is tightly sequenced and no step can be omitted! Only in this way can the clay reach the performance best suited for porcelain making and produce good porcelain!

Shopkeeper Wang dares to guarantee: similar shapes may be found elsewhere, but the refined porcelain clay is certainly not as good as ours.

Traditional forming craft

Shopkeeper Wang Porcelain uses the "traditional fully hand-thrown method." This method follows the record in the Ming dynasty work "Tiangong Kaiwu." The clay body is soft and the wheel spins fast, so during the process it is very easy to damage, deform, and scrap, demanding high skill and a long cycle!

A piece of porcelain must go through 72 steps before it can be completed. Some seemingly ordinary motions require decades of practice for a master to achieve. Fine carving, a life within the brushstrokes - with the slightest slackness, vitality is lacking and all value is lost!

From something as small as selecting pine firewood for firing and the gentle pressure of the brush;

to something as fine as the ratio of ingredients in the mix and judging the moisture of the drying racks;

up to kneading the clay body by foot and controlling temperatures of a thousand degrees;
