Dahlia, also known as dahlia pinnata, dahlia, tree dahlia and so on, is a perennial herbaceous bulbous plant, with a great many praised names for its flower colors and forms, rich and colorful, and is one of the world's famous flowers. Dahlias have a long flowering period, large flower diameter, many blooms, and the flowers are especially big, so they are loved by many flower enthusiasts.
1. Soil: The choice of soil is relatively important. If the soil is completely suitable for the plant's growth, the plant will grow relatively healthily and vigorously. Otherwise, the plant will be relatively thin and weak and prone to disease. Dahlia likes a loose-textured environment. I personally recommend sandy soil and humus soil. Decomposed nutrient soil is also good. If planting in the ground, dig drainage ditches in time and do a good job of drainage.
2. Light duration: Dahlia should be placed in a place with plenty of sunlight. Dahlia loves light and cannot tolerate shade. If placed in a shady place for a long time, it will grow poorly, with weak roots, thin leaves and slender stems, small and pale flowers, and some may even fail to bloom. When the temperature is below 30 degrees, expose it to as much sun as possible; if it can be in the sun all day, that is best of all. This way the plant is robust and the flowers are large and full; when the temperature is above 35 degrees, do the shading work in time to avoid exposure to the sun, and you can use the morning or evening sunlight to give it some sun.
3. Watering and fertilizing: Dahlia leaves are thick and large, and their demand for water is relatively sensitive. Lack of water will cause leaves to wilt, and too much water will cause root rot. Just keep the soil moist. Never let the soil stay pasty for a long time. When overwatered, move it to a cool, breezy place in time. As for fertilizing, keep nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium balanced. Adjust the ratio of nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium moderately during the seedling stage and flowering stage. I am rather lazy, and from beginning to end, I use one ratio.
4. Pruning: As time goes by, the dahlia plant gets bigger and bigger, and you can prune the branches according to the actual situation. Those growing in pots can consider a "second bloom". After flowering once in the first half of the year, in September you can cut off a portion at the stem, leaving only two or three nodes, so that new shoots will sprout in autumn, and in October beautiful, bright flowers will bloom again. It flowers twice a year.
