Jade plant, also known as doubanzhang, jingtianshu, and fleshy evergreen, has thick, fleshy leaves and is a succulent in the Crassulaceae family. Although it looks almost identical to the jade tree (Crassula ovata), there are still differences: the jade tree's leaves are not this emerald green and have a red tinge along the edges, while the jade plant's leaves are entirely green and a bit larger. Its leaves stay green all year round and it is very easy to care for. Although many gardeners grow potted jade plants, they generally only produce leaves and rarely bloom. What is going on?

If your jade plant will not bloom, try this method: it will push out lots of new shoots, grow taller and flower!

Everyone knows that growing a beautiful jade plant is actually very easy. You only need to pick a few leaves for leaf cuttings, or take small branches and stick them casually into the potting soil, in spring or autumn, and within a dozen or so days they will grow roots and become a small jade plant seedling.

If you want your jade plant to produce pretty little flowers, then this freshly rooted cutting is still a fairly small plant; a seedling that was just cuttings less than a year ago is not easy to flower. You must grow the seedling until it is lush and sturdy before it can bloom.

How can you make a jade plant grow lush, sturdy and vigorous? First of all, the potting soil is very important. The soil must be fertile and airy, full of nutrients. You can add some leaf mold, peat soil, pine needle soil, and then add some vermiculite, coarse sand, river sand and so on. As the plant grows, repot it into a pot of the corresponding size; a slightly larger pot is better.

In summer, do not expose it to scorching sun; place it in a cool, ventilated spot so it can get through the summer safely. In winter, place it in a warm, sunny place sheltered from cold wind, reduce watering, and let it get through the winter safely. At other times, give it as much sun as possible, and water with fertilizer water once every half month to provide plenty of nutrients. This way its new leaves and new shoots keep emerging, and it grows taller and sturdier.

If you want your jade plant to bloom, there is a little trick: apart from winter and summer, if conditions allow, be sure to keep it outdoors on a terrace for a period of time. Outdoor light is not blocked by glass, so the leaves can photosynthesize more easily and grow healthier. With suitable temperatures, plenty of sun and ample fertilizer water, it will easily bloom. It flowers much more easily than one kept indoors.

A jade plant generally grows for three to four years. Combined with this kind of outdoor care, when the canopy reaches a diameter of one meter, when it is tall enough and lush enough, it will flower especially easily.

When growing a jade plant normally, apart from keeping plenty of sunlight in winter, watering less, avoiding waterlogging, and using a semi-sandy fertile soil, it will gradually grow into an old specimen with a thick trunk, and bloom abundantly!
