Why is red bean also called love bean? An analysis of the origin of the name
The red bean has a profound cultural heritage. The true love bean (Adenanthera pavonina, known as sea red bean) is as hard as a diamond, as bright red as blood, like a beating heart, red and shining, never infested by insects and never rotting, with a sparkling luster that never fades. It is a spiritual auspicious object that brings good fortune. It symbolizes love and longing. The poem by the poet Wang Wei (701-761) of the High Tang period refers to the "sea red bean" described in this article. Red beans grow in the south, how many branches will spring bring? I hope you gather more of them, for this thing most stirs longing.
Origin of the red bean love bean, part one
It is said that in ancient times there was a loving couple, Han Ping and the chaste woman Xiang, who were separated by a foolish emperor, who also ordered that the two be buried on either side of a main road, not allowed to be next to each other. Later, a tall red bean tree grew from the grave of the chaste woman Xiang; from Han Ping's grave grew a love vine, the vine entwining the tree, the tree protecting the vine, inseparable in life and death.
Origin of the red bean love bean, part two
Legend has it that in ancient times a man went off to war, and his wife leaned day and night beneath a great tree on a high mountain, praying and watching; because she missed her beloved on the frontier, she wept beneath the tree. After her tears ran dry, what flowed out were drops of bright red blood. The blood drops turned into red beans, the red beans took root and sprouted, grew into a great tree, and bore a whole tree full of red beans, which people called love beans. Day after day, spring went and autumn came. The fruit of the great tree, together with the longing in the girl's heart, slowly became the most beautiful red heart-shaped seed on earth - the love bean.
