Clivia is a very popular houseplant. Many gardening enthusiasts like to keep Clivia at home, because it not only has emerald green leaves, but can also produce beautiful flowers in winter. Especially during the Spring Festival, which is exactly when Clivia flowers are blooming vigorously, it is also a very beautiful holiday flower.

Clivia goes dormant during the high temperatures of summer each year, and only wakes up in autumn when the weather turns cool. It is now autumn, and the cool weather makes this the golden period for Clivia growth. At this stage, you must care for Clivia properly so that the plant can grow healthily, produce new leaves, and at the same time promote flower bud development to bloom beautifully in winter. Therefore, during the growing process, careful maintenance and management are essential.

1. Repot and change the soil for Clivia in autumn

Anyone who has grown Clivia knows that Clivia is a plant with fleshy roots. If you do not repot it for a year, the plant's roots will fill the pot and lack nutrients. So in autumn you need to repot it and change the soil. When repotting and changing the soil for Clivia, first prepare a mixed soil using 1 part fully fermented peanut shells, 1 part garden soil, 1 part river sand, and 1 part leaf mold. After mixing thoroughly, it will be loose and breathable. Take the Clivia out of its original pot, loosen the root ball, trim off the old roots and rotten roots, and leave it in a shady place to dry for a day. Then plant it in the pot. Place the potted plant in a shady place, and after 1 week of acclimatization, move it to a balcony with good light for normal care.

2. Correct and even light direction

Clivia is a plant that likes light, especially in autumn and winter, when it needs increased indirect light. It is usually placed on a balcony, but when placing Clivia, you must pay attention to the direction: the light should shine perpendicular to the leaves, and then the leaves on both sides should be placed in an east-west direction. In this way, the leaves of the whole plant will grow evenly, and there will be no crooked or asymmetric leaves.

3. Supplement fertilizer to promote flower bud development

Autumn is the golden period for Clivia growth. Generally, after entering winter, it begins to develop flower buds. Therefore, you should spray the leaves of Clivia once a week with a 0.2% potassium dihydrogen phosphate water solution, so that the flower buds develop rapidly. When nutrients are sufficient, the plant's flower buds can develop well and grow healthily. Otherwise, Clivia may fail to bloom or the flower stalk may get stuck.

Many gardening enthusiasts also encounter crooked leaves and stuck flower stalks when caring for Clivia.

1. Reasons Clivia grows crooked leaves

Clivia grows crooked leaves mainly because of uneven light, because leaves have the habit of growing toward the light. When Clivia receives uneven light, some leaves will tilt.

How to fix it

When Clivia grows crooked leaves, correct them promptly. Place the pot on a south-facing balcony, then position the leaves on both sides in an east-west direction, so the plant can receive south-facing light evenly. Then stick a layer of tin foil on the crooked leaves and care for them for two weeks, and the leaves will be corrected. During later care, rotate the Clivia pot 180 degrees every week. In this way, the plant will grow regular leaves.

2. Reasons Clivia flower stalks get stuck

When a Clivia flower stalk gets stuck, it is because the flower stalk does not grow normally and becomes trapped at the base of the Clivia, and then starts to open its flowers. The cause is poor light and insufficient nutrients.

How to fix it

When you see signs that the Clivia flower stalk is getting stuck, treat the plant promptly. Keep it in an environment around 10°C, and cover the Clivia flower stalk with a black plastic bag. This can make the flower stalk grow taller and at the same time inhibit the flowers from opening. After the flower stalk has fully grown out, move the pot to a warm balcony with good light, and the flowers can then open normally.
