With just 1 seed, you can grow peonies and tree peonies with flowers bigger than your face
Plant herbaceous peonies in October, and wait for the flowers next year
1. Sowing
It is now the season for harvesting seeds. A few days ago, Huahua collected a lot of seeds, ready to go all out.
Mature herbaceous peony seeds are black-red. We pick the seeds out of the already split fruits and sow them immediately after harvesting.
Soak the seeds in warm water for 12 hours to soak and sprout them. During this time, remove the seeds floating on the water surface with low maturity to increase the germination rate of sowing.
Prepare loose, breathable soil, sow the seeds in spots on the soil surface, and cover with soil to a thickness 2~3 times the diameter of the seeds.
Herbaceous peony seeds need a certain amount of low temperature and darkness to germinate. Generally, after we sow them in autumn, they will only grow roots and not sprout. They will sprout by April of the next year!
Herbaceous peonies propagated by sowing like this need at least 4~5 years to bloom, but this propagation method can cultivate new herbaceous peony varieties~
2. Division
Division is our most commonly used propagation method. It is generally carried out from early September to late October each year. Flower lovers planting in the ground must pay attention to the timing of division; neither too early nor too late will do.
After the aboveground branches and leaves of the herbaceous peony dry up, cut them off, leaving about 10cm of the stem base. Use a tool to dig out the roots of the herbaceous peony, ready for division.
When dividing, each clump should have 2~5 buds. Cut along the texture of the root system, apply plant ash to the wounds, leave them in a cool place to dry for a while, and then plant.
It should be noted that new plants after division propagation will not bloom until the year after next, but Huahua has brought a solution to this problem.
When dividing, we do not have to dig out the entire mother plant. We can dig soil on only one side and cut off part of the roots and buds, so the untouched mother plant on the other side can bloom as usual!
Divide tree peonies, and 1 clump becomes 10 clumps
Tree peonies are actually like herbaceous peonies, also propagated by division in autumn. This time should also be when flower fans of all kinds plant tree peonies~
When dividing, dig out the entire tree peony seedling, remove the soil, cut it along the texture of the root system, keep 3~5 branches per clump, leave it in a cool place to dry for 1 day, and then plant.
When planting, pay attention to letting the root system spread naturally in the soil, then hold the seedling with one hand and fill soil with the other. When the soil is half filled, gently lift the root system upward to prevent the roots from curling.
Then continue filling soil. After compacting the soil, water thoroughly, and wait until next year to see large tree peony flowers!
