Grandma's yucca blooms with 200 flowers, flower stalk over two meters tall

On October 9, I went to visit my grandma. In her yard, I saw a flowering plant bearing more than 200 flowers, with a flower stalk over two meters tall. From what I could tell, this potted flowering plant looked a bit like an aloe, but do aloes even bloom? I certainly had never seen one. In the end, I had to ask Grandma: "Grandma, what flower is this? How come it has so many blooms?" Grandma smiled and said: "This is a yucca. When a yucca blooms, it means prosperity."

According to Grandma, this yucca was planted in February, brought back from the city by my youngest uncle. It was tossed into a flowerpot and left in the yard with hardly any care, yet unexpectedly it grew so vigorously and produced so many flowers.

Although yucca has the character "lan" in its Chinese name, it is not an orchid. Yucca belongs to the genus Yucca in the family Liliaceae. Its leaves are broad and sword-shaped. As a houseplant, yucca has the ability to absorb harmful gases from the air. Yucca has a strong capacity to absorb formaldehyde, sulfur dioxide, ammonia, hydrogen fluoride and other substances in the air, making it excellent at purifying the air.

"What did you feed the yucca? It grew so sturdy and bloomed so much?" I asked Grandma mischievously. Grandma said she hadn't fed it anything special, just watered it with diluted farmyard manure now and then, and every few days poured some rice-washing water into the pot. As for watering, it was all done by the heavens; it had never been watered by hand.

The yucca's blooming season is in autumn. The flowers are pure white, hanging down like little bells, very beautiful. Their faint delicate fragrance is like that of an orchid, intoxicating and refreshing to the heart. Unfortunately, the yucca's blooming period is very short, and the flowers only open at night, gradually withering in about a day. Yucca has many uses: its leaves can be used as feed, can be made into rope, and it is also a common urban landscaping plant.

Have you ever seen a yucca?
