Think it's impossible for bougainvillea to climb to the 9th floor? That's just because you've never seen it! In many places in the south, bougainvillea grows several stories tall. If you're in the north, then you can choose to plant a wisteria, because climbing to 77 meters is a piece of cake!

-Bougainvillea 9 floors tall-

In Lane 6 of Liantang Village, Luohu District, Shenzhen, there is a famous bougainvillea planted by 87-year-old Granny Zhou. Six or seven branches of the bougainvillea grow upward along the 9-story residential building, and the entire building is basically covered by bougainvillea flowers.

The flower was planted by Granny Zhou 15 years ago. When planted, it was only 30cm long, and she never expected it to grow so tall. Many people ask, has no one objected to it growing so big? Because the entire building belongs to Granny Zhou, and the tenants inside also love it, so the bougainvillea was allowed to grow freely. Now it has become an internet sensation in Shenzhen.

In Guangdong, Guangxi, Fujian, and even Yunnan, you can actually find quite a few particularly gigantic bougainvilleas. When they bloom, they cascade from top to bottom, as beautiful as a flower waterfall.

The 9-story bougainvillea in Guangzhou has been cared for by two generations.

-How to grow bougainvillea-

According to Granny Zhou and Mr. Luo from Guangzhou, besides normal care, they also regularly collect some fish intestines and fish innards and bury them in the potting soil beside the flowers. Only then can the flowers bloom so vigorously and for so long.

Bougainvillea has low soil requirements, but it grows best in sandy soil that is loose and well-draining. Bougainvillea is relatively drought-tolerant. When watering normally, follow the principle of "don't water until dry, and water thoroughly when you do." One month before blooming, you also need to give it a hard time. After watering, wait until the potting soil is dry and the branches and leaves droop softly before watering again, which helps flower bud differentiation and formation.

Bougainvillea is fertilizer-tolerant. You can fertilize once every half month, and fully decomposed organic fertilizer is best. However, do not fertilize during the water-control period to prevent burning the seedlings.

Bougainvillea needs a large amount of light to grow, and lack of light won't do. The plant will not only grow weakly, but also bloom less, or even not bloom at all. Ground planting is only suitable in the south. In the north, it can only be grown in pots. When the lowest temperature drops below about 8°C, it must be moved indoors, otherwise it is prone to cold damage!

-The 77-meter wisteria-

Judith Wilson in the UK planted a wisteria tree, and after growing for more than 20 years, it covered the wall for a total of more than 77 meters. For the first 14 years, the wisteria kept growing along the wall, and every time it was about to bloom, the flower buds were killed by frost. As a result, after 14 years, the wisteria may have finally adapted to the environment and at last bloomed into a waterfall, covering the wall! Sometimes surprises really do come when you least expect them!

Now every year she opens her wisteria garden for visits to raise money for charity. I hope her flowers can keep blooming year after year, and her fundraising can help more people!

-How to grow wisteria-

Wisteria should be chosen for its long main root, so the planting spot should be deeper. Wisteria has strong adaptability and does not have high soil requirements, but it is better to plant it in a place with slightly higher terrain that does not accumulate water.

Wisteria has strong drought tolerance. Water only after the soil dries. In August, when flower buds are differentiating, it should be kept appropriately dry. In autumn and winter, reduce watering as the temperature drops.

During the growing period, apply additional fertilizer 2 to 3 times. Before blooming, apply 1 application of phosphorus-based fertilizer, and it will bloom more and the colors will be more vivid. After the flowers fade, apply one application of nitrogen fertilizer to restore vigor.

Wisteria should be planted in a place with sufficient light. The most suitable temperature for growth is 20 to 30°C, but it is highly cold-tolerant and can endure low temperatures of around -8°C in winter, so it can be planted in the open ground in many parts of the country.

If you are in South China, then you can plant both bougainvillea and wisteria

If you are in Central China or North China, just choose a wisteria and plant it!

Decades later, it can also bloom all over the wall

Enjoy the flowers and sip some tea!
