The anthurium has emerald green leaves and brilliant red flowers. With proper care and management, it can keep blooming continuously all year round. At the same time, the anthurium is also fairly shade-tolerant and can even help purify the air, so it is very suitable to keep as a potted plant indoors, where you can enjoy both the flowers and the foliage. It is clear that a potted anthurium at home is very practical whether for ornament or for improving the air. So, can anthurium be divided into separate pots?

Dividing anthurium into pots

In fact, anthurium can be divided into separate pots. By dividing one vigorously growing potted anthurium, you can turn it into several pots and thus get more potted anthuriums. But dividing anthurium into pots is essentially propagation by division. By using this method, we can obtain more potted anthuriums. And it is not only anthurium; many potted flowering plants can often be divided into separate pots as well. So, how do you divide anthurium into pots?

Anthurium: growth habits and care notes

Dividing anthurium into pots andotherLike many flowering plants, the method is fairly simple, as long as you follow the standard procedure. First, prepare a potted anthurium that is growing normally. To make it easier to remove from the pot and divide, stop watering it 3-4 days in advance so the potting soil stays slightly on the dry side. If the substrate used before was mainly coconut coir, removing it from the pot and dividing it are usually quite easy, but if it is another growing medium, we need to be careful.

After removing the whole anthurium from the pot, shake off the excess old soil so the base is exposed for division, but keep the root system as intact as possible to avoid causing extensive damage to the roots. Of course, if the roots already have many old, weak, fine, rotten or broken roots and other poorly growing roots, we also need to cut them off. Doing so can stimulate the plant to sprout new roots and thus better promote its growth.

Next, you need to divide it into several portions along the parts of the anthurium's rhizome that separate easily. The number does not need to be large; a suitable number is fine. Then use a product to sterilize and disinfect the roots to prevent the wounds left by root pruning and division from becoming infected and lowering the survival rate. Also, if the anthurium being divided has flowers on it, we do not have to cut them off; we can also cut them off, depending on the situation. For each single anthurium divided out, it is generally enough to keep 3-4 old leaves.

Then prepare new flower pots and new growing soil, build a drainage layer at the bottom of the pot, and you can pour in a 3-5 cm thick layer of pine needles or crushed stones; then spread a layer of base fertilizer, cover it with a layer of new growing soil such as peat soil or coconut coir, then plant the divided anthurium, and finally cover and fill in the soil until it covers the place where the anthurium sprouts new leaves. This completes the process of dividing the anthurium into pots and repotting and transplanting it.

But in the end, you still need to water it thoroughly once, or directly use the soaking method to supply water, to ensure the pot has suitable moisture. After finishing the watering, place the separately potted anthuriums in a cool place to recover. Once the divided anthuriums have successfully settled in and survived, resume normal care and management. In the later stage, what mainly needs to be done well is the management of light, temperature, watering and fertilizing. As long as care and management are done well, the divided anthuriums will keep their leaves evergreen through all four seasons and bloom continuously.
