Growing vegetables on the balcony is becoming more and more popular, but not everyone can grow them well. If you do not understand some issues, whatever you plant will only be "little bean sprouts." Below, Xiaoye tells you a few key questions about growing vegetables. Once you understand them, whatever you plant will surely thrive.
Three key questions
1. Soil
Soil is the first issue that many balcony vegetable-growing beginners pay attention to. Vegetables do not have very high requirements for soil, but it is generally not recommended to dig soil directly from a community flowerbed for use. On the one hand, this kind of soil is often relatively hard and compacted, and on the other hand, it tends to have more pests. So if you want to grow plants, try to choose special growing soil or buy coconut bricks.
2. Fertilizing.
Fertilizing is an indispensable factor during the growth of vegetables, and different plants have different growth needs. Generally, vegetables can only be fertilized when they have 4-5 true leaves. For fertilizer choices, you can buy microbial inoculant special fertilizer for fruits and vegetables, worm castings, etc. online. In everyday life, eggshells, rice-washing water, water left after cooking vegetables, and so on are also good natural fertilizers.
3. Pest and disease control.
Pests and diseases are the most commonly encountered troubles in the process of growing vegetables, but under well-ventilated conditions they almost never occur. Here are some commonly used tips for preventing pests and diseases, such as spraying with garlic water, or applying coffee water to the leaves. Ginkgo leaves can also serve as an insect repellent.
Lettuce growing demonstration
Lettuce should be the easiest vegetable to grow. Generally, it can be harvested about 20 days after sowing. It is very delicious used to make vegetable salad, sandwiches, oyster sauce lettuce, or wrapped around grilled meat.
Sowing is also very simple. According to what was said above, prepare a suitable container (the container must have holes) and soil. Loosen the soil with a small shovel, evenly scatter the lettuce seeds, and water thoroughly (here it is recommended to use a spray bottle with a fine water stream, otherwise the seeds are easily blown apart), then cover with a layer of fine soil.
After sowing, water once every two or three days. After about two weeks, the lettuce will sprout and emerge from the soil. After emergence, if you feel it is too dense, you can thin the seedlings appropriately. If your lettuce leaves turn yellow, it means poor nutrition, and at this time you can apply a little fertilizer appropriately.
There is also a method when harvesting lettuce: do not pull up the whole lettuce, but break off leaves to eat. In this way, the lettuce can continue to grow, and you can keep eating lettuce continuously, all the way until the lettuce flowers and sets seed!
