Many friends like to keep some flowers and plants at home to decorate the room and purify the air, and at times like this the snake plant (Sansevieria) is naturally indispensable. The biggest feature of the snake plant is its ability to purify the air; the snake plant can absorb more than 80% of harmful gases indoors, and its ability to handle formaldehyde in particular is extremely strong, which is especially noticeable in newly renovated homes. Last time I went to see Auntie Zhang, my neighbor, she had grown her snake plants very well. When I asked her what the trick was, she said she feeds them "snacks" every day, which are more nutritious than fertilizer - they grew to 1 m tall in 2 years!

Auntie Zhang said that if you repot the snake plant and change the soil every autumn, it can grow to two meters tall in two or three years, very spectacular and lush. She does have certain tricks and methods when growing snake plants: every autumn when she repots the snake plant and changes the soil, she chooses her own fermented organic fertilizer.

This fertilizer is peanuts. Auntie Zhang likes eating peanuts; after boiling the peanuts in clean water, she gives them to the family to eat, though in fact she eats most of them herself - as she said this, Auntie Zhang looked at the snake plant and the corners of her mouth turned up. She uses the decomposed peanut shells as fertilizer, which are rich in nitrogen and at the same time have particularly strong water retention and air permeability, making them very suitable for mixing with other soil types, and for use as potting soil for plants that fear waterlogging and root rot.

The specific method is: crush the peanut shells, put them in a plastic bag, add water and let them sit for two hours, drain off the water, tie the plastic bag tightly, place it in a warm, sunny spot, and wait for them to decompose. You can also spread the crushed peanut shells on the surface of the flower pot; in winter they can protect against freezing and keep the plant warm, and in summer they can shade the roots and prevent rainwater from directly washing away the potting soil. After fully mixing the fermented organic fertilizer with the original soil and sandy soil in a 2:1:1 ratio, use it when changing the soil for the snake plant every autumn.

How do you grow snake plants better? Moderate light: snake plants need moderate light. Potted snake plants should not be kept in dark places for long periods; they should often be given diffused light, otherwise the leaves will become dull and lack vitality. But they must not be suddenly moved into the sun either; they should first adapt in a dimly lit spot.

Putting plants in the living room is very common, and it should be noted that living room plants are mainly used to decorate the furniture, using a staggered arrangement of plant heights to harmonize the monotony of the home's straight lines. First of all, you should focus on decorative beauty, and the number should not be too many, so small snake plants should be placed on the coffee table, while if it is a large pot it can be placed beside the sofa, or in front of a floor-to-ceiling window, making people feel a sense of harmony and vitality.
