The worst thing when growing roses is having weak, spindly plants that don't grow shoots. Shoots are very important for rejuvenating roses and renewing the plant. So how can you get roses to grow shoots?

First, let's understandWhat are shoots?

Rose shoots refer to the strong buds that sprout from the base of the rose, which grow very quickly and produce thick, sturdy branches.

How can you get roses to grow shoots?

If you want roses to grow shoots, we first need to understand the nutrient transport process of roses, and know why some roses don't like to grow shoots.

Conditions for roses to grow shoots

1. Sufficient fertilizer and water

Roses need to consume nutrients to grow, so no matter the situation, sufficient fertilizer and water are necessary, and are the primary condition for growing strong shoots, followed by artificial techniques.

2. Changing the nutrient transport pattern

Under normal circumstances, the nutrient transport pattern of roses is to transport nutrients toward the top of the plant. That is, the roots absorb inorganic salts and transport them upward to the new buds or flower buds at the top of the rose branches.

Under this nutrient transport pattern, if a rose wants to grow shoots, it needs very sufficient fertilizer and water. That is to say, only when the other branches have already eaten enough and there is a surplus will it be distributed to the basically un-sprouted buds, and shoots will be produced.

But many times, this condition simply cannot be met, and if we are eager for the rose to produce shoots, what should we do? This requires changing the nutrient transport pattern of the rose.

We can change the nutrient transport pattern of the rose through pruning, or by having multiple branches and bending multiple side branches.

After pruning, the nutrient transport of the rose goes to the buds at the top of the branches, so after pruning, it is usually the buds at the top of the branches that sprout first. When nutrients are sufficient, shoots will also sprout.

Pruning is more suitable for larger rose plants, but if it is a small rose seedling, or even a rose with only one or two thin, weak branches, pruning is not so useful, and without care experience, small seedlings after pruning are also prone to dying due to poor water control.

So for small seedlings, Lanyao suggests you just bend the branches horizontally. You can use a string to pull all the rose branches to the side, to a horizontal position, which will likewise change the nutrient transport pattern of the rose.

If the rose branches are relatively hard and not easy to bend horizontally, you can directly lay the flower pot on its side. For roses planted in the ground, we can use the branch-twisting method, which is to first flatten the rose branch with pliers, and then bend it horizontally. This way only the xylem of the branch breaks, the bark will not break, and it will not affect the life of the rose.

Isn't the method simple? Get your roses at home to grow shoots.
