Rinse the rice, then pour the rice water down the drain? What a waste! In fact, seemingly useless rice water has so many uses!

Reduce the fishy smell of fish and meat

For ingredients with a strong fishy smell, such as seafood, beef and mutton, soaking them in rice water easily removes the smell and makes them taste even more delicious when cooked.

1. Rinse the salted fish clean with water.

2. Pour the rice water into a basin, add 50 grams of edible alkaline powder, and stir well.

3. Put in the salted fish, submerge it in the rice water, soak for 3 hours, then cook it directly.

Remove grease from bowls and dishes

Once rice water is heated, its cleaning power is very strong. This is because the starch in the rice water is denatured, and denatured starch has good oil-loving and water-loving properties, so it can easily absorb grease, making it the most eco-friendly cleaner in the kitchen.

1. Pour the rice water into a pot and heat it to about 50°C.

2. Turn off the heat, put the greasy bowls and dishes into the rice water and soak for 10 minutes.

3. Wash the bowls and dishes with the rice water, then rinse them with clean water.

Remove strange odors from the cutting board

A cutting board in the kitchen will develop an unpleasant odor after being used for a long time. Especially those used for a long time to cut meat and fish, or often used for both raw and cooked food, the smell is even harder to remove. Washing with rice water can easily remove this odor.

1. Put the cutting board into the rice water and soak for 10 minutes.

2. Sprinkle some salt on the cutting board and scrub repeatedly with a cleaning cloth.

3. Wash and scrub the cutting board with the rice water, then rinse it clean with water.

Quickly soak dried goods

Soaking dried goods such as dried bamboo shoots, kelp, wood ear mushrooms, sea cucumber, and squid requires care. Using ordinary water usually takes a long time to soak them well, but if you soak them in rice water, not only can they be soaked faster, they are also easier to wash clean and cook through.

1. Put the dried bamboo shoots into a pot, add water (covering the dried bamboo shoots by 3 cm) and a little alkaline powder, and bring to a boil.

2. Turn off the heat, let the dried bamboo shoots soak for 15 minutes, then take them out and rinse them clean in water.

3. Soak them in rice water for 3 hours and they are ready.
