In the next month, these 8 flowers will root from cuttings, and they can bloom in autumn and winter too

The weather right now, cool in the morning and evening and warm at noon, is the best time for cuttings. For plants that bloom in autumn and winter, such as bougainvillea, kalanchoe, and Christmas cactus... you can cut a branch and stick it in soil, and it will root quickly with a high survival rate. Today Huahua will walk you through it step by step!

Root bougainvillea from cuttings and it blooms by the start of winter

Cutting steps

1. Choose vigorous branches from the current year, not old branches (which root slowly) or tender branches (which rot easily); keep only one pair of leaves at the top and let them dry in a ventilated spot.

2. Dip the cutting in yellow clay, or soak it in rooting water for a few hours, then insert it into soaked floral foam or a sponge block, to a depth of about 4/5. After inserting, place it on a tray with shallow water.

3. Place the floral foam block on a tray with shallow water and keep it in bright, indirect light. If the air feels very dry, you can cover the area around the tray with plastic film and poke a few holes for ventilation.

After a week, if the leaves are still firm, it means the condition is very good and roots are starting to form at the bottom.

4. At this point you can find a few disposable paper cups, drill holes in the bottom, fill them halfway with potting soil, and bury the floral foam inside, misting daily to keep it moist.

When the leaves grow larger, gradually expose the plant to direct light, and in about 15 days you will see obvious roots growing out.

5. At this point add more soil to the cup and keep growing it. Once the condition is stable, begin transplanting and planting out. During growth, pinch the tips 2~3 times in a row to encourage side branches to sprout.

If the temperature is suitable in southern regions, it can bloom before winter begins; in the north it generally does not bloom until next spring.

Root kalanchoe from cuttings and buds appear in 1 month

Kalanchoe can be propagated from cuttings of the whole stem, and rooting gets harder from top to bottom. Terminal buds, tender branches of the current year, and flower stems that have already bloomed root quickly, while woody stems and old plants root with difficulty.

Cutting steps

1. Choose a newly grown terminal bud from the current year with 2 pairs of leaves, and be sure it is in good condition and disease-free. Let the wound dry in a cool, shady spot.

2. For the cutting medium, mix nutrient soil, perlite, and coir brick soil. Insert the terminal bud, keep it out of direct light and ventilated at first, then gradually increase light later.

3. After inserting, water thoroughly, then water by the see-dry-see-wet rule and keep the soil slightly moist. During the first week after cutting, keep it out of direct light and ventilated, then gradually increase light. It will root in about 10 days.

4. Start transplanting after a month. The soil should not be too wet; the best state is when it holds together in a ball when squeezed and falls apart when you open your hand. Do not water too frequently; water by the see-dry-see-wet rule, and be sure to increase ventilation, otherwise black rot is likely.

5. For cuttings that grow and develop well, short-day treatment for 3~4 weeks will make them form buds. After buds form, give more sun, supplement a little phosphorus and potassium fertilizer, and water less.

Root chrysanthemums from cuttings and they bloom 3 months later

Cutting steps

1. You must choose tender branches of the current year as cuttings, about 10cm long. Remove most of the leaves, keep 2~3 at the top, then let the wound dry in a cool, shady spot.

2. For the cutting medium, mix river sand and peat soil. After misting it wet, use a small wooden stick to poke a few holes 3~4cm deep, then put the cuttings in and press gently with your hand to firm them.

3. After inserting, water thoroughly, place in a cool, ventilated spot, and mist daily to keep moist. It will root in about 20 days.

4. Transplant one week after rooting, gradually increasing light during this time. After it gets through the post-transplant adjustment period, give it more sun so it can grow more flower buds. Some varieties cut in October can be enjoyed as chrysanthemums in bloom by the New Year.

Root Christmas cactus from cuttings and it roots in 10 days

Cutting steps

1. When pruning Christmas cactus, cut off the overly dense stem segments and take 1~2 segments as cuttings.

Apply a little rooting powder to the base of the cutting to increase the rooting rate.

3. Mix pine needle soil, perlite, and vermiculite as the cutting medium. Before inserting, mist with water until half moist, then put the cuttings in and water thoroughly once. Put several cuttings in one pot and keep good spacing between plants, so you will not need to transplant later.

4. Cover the pot with a plastic bag and leave a little opening for ventilation. Open the bag every 2~3 days to mist water. After 10 days new shoots will emerge; at this point remove the bag and manage normally.

Root camellia from cuttings for even easier care

Cutting steps

1. Select vigorous semi-woody branches, each 10cm long, and keep 3~4 leaves on the upper part. Cuttings that are too short do not root easily.

2. Soak the branches in rooting water, then take them out after 5 minutes and let them dry.

3. The cutting medium can be vermiculite or pure sand. After misting it wet, insert the cuttings, water thoroughly, then cover with a layer of plastic bag on top. Do not forget to poke a few holes for ventilation.

4. Place the pot in a cool, ventilated spot and water once every 2 days. It will root in about 1 month, and after rooting gradually expose it to direct light.

Root azaleas from cuttings and 1 branch can fill 1 pot

Cutting steps

1. Cut a semi-woody branch 8~10cm long and remove the leaves at the base. Cut the upper leaves in half to reduce water evaporation.

2. Use pine needles and leaf mold as the cutting medium, and bury a few small stones at the bottom of the pot as a drainage layer. After misting the medium wet, put the cuttings in and water thoroughly to keep moist.

If there are many cuttings, you can put them all in a foam box to root, with the insertion depth at about 3cm.

3. After cutting is complete, water thoroughly once, then cover with a plastic bag and place in a cool spot. Open the bag daily to mist water. They will root after 1 month, and after two months many small shoots will grow.

4. At this point begin transplanting. It is best to transplant with soil attached. After potting, first keep it in bright, indirect light, misting daily to keep moist. After half a month, expose it to direct light. With normal care, it will bloom in March of the following spring.

Root osmanthus from cuttings and it can even grow outdoors in winter

Cutting steps

1. Cut a semi-woody branch of the current year, 8~10cm long, and keep 2 leaves at the top.

2. Soak the branch in carbendazim or potassium permanganate solution, then take it out after 30 minutes and let it dry.

3. Use loose, breathable acidic soil for the cutting medium, mixed with perlite and vermiculite. After misting the medium wet, poke a few small holes and put the cuttings in.

4. After inserting, water thoroughly once and keep it in bright, indirect light. Mist and spray daily; when the soil is almost dry, water along the edge of the pot. It begins rooting in about 20 days and grows new leaves after 1 month.

Root geraniums from cuttings and they can bloom in 3 months

Cutting steps

1. The terminal buds left when pinching geraniums can be used for cuttings. Cut with scissors just above the bud point between two nodes, and move quickly to reduce damage to the branch.

The cutting branch should ideally keep one bud point

The cut end must be dried

2. Use a mixture of peat, perlite, and river sand as the cutting medium. First use chopsticks to poke a few small holes in the medium, put the cuttings in, and press slightly firm.

3. If the medium is very wet, no watering is needed after inserting; if it is too dry, you must water thoroughly once, then place in a cool spot and give light after 3 days.

4. The whole process needs no covering to keep moist. Gradually increase light. The shorter and sturdier the cutting seedling, the faster it forms flower buds.

Note: When cutting, it is best to insert along the edge of the pot. There is no standing water at the pot edge, so it is less likely to rot, roots quickly, and has a high survival rate.
